Itchy's answer sounds good. On the tombs of Crusaders the if the knight had his feet crossed he'd survived one battle. If he had his legs crossed he'd survived more than one.

the reason probably stems from Hinduism and their work with chakras
the root/base chakra lies at the base of the spine, and the cross leg position frees that area so that work is done with more ease
it grounds and draws energy .... it alligns the spine
