I have my own personal theory that modern Christianity, which pulls most of its traditions from European Paganism, is actually Paganism in Disguise. Maybe all of the modern Christians are really Closeted Pagans. Maybe all of you happy little closeted Pagans should come out and enjoy the Yuletide.

First of all let me apologize for the way many on the Christian side have answered this question.

You are very much correct that most of the Christian traditions we observe in the west have pagan roots. No one knows what day Jesus was born, Christmas trees, ornaments, stockings, and gift exchanges are all parts of different pagan celebrations.

The word Christmas or Christ's Mass began as a time to celebrate Jesus' birth mainly because no one knew when Jesus was born. The date seems to have been selected so that it would neatly replace a pagan ritual. I guess the thinking was if you can't get them to change their rituals, then change the meaning behind the rituals.

Anyway to answer your question, I am a Christian and I celebrate Christmas because I am also an American, it is a part of my culture whether I am a Christian or not. I do try to take time during this season to remember the spirit of sacrificial love and tidings of peace that Christ brought to us from God. But in reality this time of year is no different than any other. I and my children also celebrate halloween for the same reason. Though it began as a pagan ritual we do not observe Oct.31st as a day to worship the dead, we are just Christians living in America, so we have fun the way Americans do (within certain limits of course :) ) So Merry Christmas my friend!

Christians co-opted Pagan dates, times, and practices for religious observances including Christmas not because they had a direct link with Christ, but rather because they didn't want to give up their own holidays and knew that others converting might feel the same way.

December 25 was observed as the Birthday of Sol Invictus, the Unconquered Sun for centuries prior to Jesus birth. Constantine was a converted worshipper of Sol Invictus, but it was not until a later emperor when the date was officially adopted.

Mistletoe? Found in Celtic Pagan midwinter practice.

Gift exchange? Found in Saturnalia (December 17 - 23) centuries prior to Christ's birth.

Christmas tree? Associated most closely with Germans, a denuded tree was strung with decorations thousands of years earlier in Canaan. The denuded tree was called an asherah. The Goddess associated with it? Asherah who had another name, Chawas that translates Eve. Chawas was associated with the Tree of Life and a Serpent centuries before the Biblical tale was written. See http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/2938/majdei.html section on Athirat/Asherah.

We go through this every day.
What does it matter? I have not noticed ANY pagans whining about Christians' holidays having roots in paganism.
Why is it such a huge deal? If we changed the date of Christmas, you would find a pagan holiday close to the date we chose. There is no pleasing some of you.
Why not give it a rest?

Is it REALLY so terribly important to you?

If the pagans are cool with it, why can't you be?

Because they're fun! Going to church and listening to those miserable psalms is lame. Decorating a tree is a blast. Opening presents is fun. Being a glutton and eating until you burst is fun. Spending time with people you love is great! Singing praises to [insert deity of your choice] is fun, too. If we took all the pagan traditions out of Christmas, bet me the Christians wouldn't be so hot on Christmas....

We pagans make easter a blast, too. With rabbits and eggs...

The majority of Christian traditions are pagan in origin? This is an ignorant statement at best and an out right lie at worst. You who worship the enemy have no business with Christianity , and you therefore haven't a clue about truth. Go play with your devil costumes and enjoy your sin for a season. Unless you repent you will be cast into the lake of fire with your master Satan. O LORD Shelter us under the blood of Jesus ,and rebuke thou Satan away in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

Rev 22:15 For outside [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and MAKETH A LIE.

Oh, a lie?

Where did you tell your children those gift came from again?

A lie is a lie anyway you put it.

2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the TRUTH, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Psa 119:142 Thy righteousness [is] an everlasting righteousness, and thy law [is] the truth.

Because they take pleasure in unrighteousness and reject the truth.
