Familiarity breeds contempt. Too much time together is one big cause. Competition for mom and dad's attention is another. Competition between themselves is another. Brothers and sisters, even in the animal kingdom, usually fight with each other. Down deep in our genes it's another guard against inbreeding. And let's not forget survival of the fittest.

My kids fight because they do things intentionally to piss each other off to get a reaction from the other one. As kids grow up though that usually eases off....mostly because they are not living under the same roof!

Because their parents have poor conflict-resolution skills, and don't know how to defuse the situation.
Also, I think it's often a response to stress. I think parents should do everything they can to train their children that conflict doesn't resolve problems but makes them worse.

Why?
Because my brother gets all the attention from my parents.
In my parents sight, I'm always wrong, and my brother is always right!
Damnit!
So I fight him!
