Do you tip the apprentice at a tattoo shop who is doing work to practice for free? There is no charge on him doing the tat!

This is for that mean grumpy man about letting a non friend who is an apprentice tattoo you. Here are the facts...He is an apprentice at a good firends shop needs the practice and honetly his work is very very good. We I guess were just wondering how much to tip not if we should or shouldn't we know we will just about how much. We are covered in ink and are very picky if he wasn't a good apprentice then he wouldn't have a chance on us.

It is a very nice gesture to tip an apprentice artist when they are working for free. By the time they are tattooing on 'humans' they better be knowing what they are doing and the tattoo should be very good (if they had been properly trained under the watchful eye of a good mentor).

Our apprentice is always very happy when he is tipped and he is producing decent stuff. The studio never ever should be getting anyone's tip money. I would never consider that at all.

Well, I value my skin a bit too much to let apprentices tattoo me.
I spent two years looking for an artist I would even consider letting tattoo me.
I'm just a tiny bit anal...

However, if I ever did let an apprentice tattoo me, I would absolutely tip them.
They work hard in the shop, and they take home little or no money.

Tip him if you think he did a good job. If something came out the way you didn't ask for (which I've had happen) obviously don't tip and of course don't go back.

I just got a new tattoo... it was a cat paw with a heart around it, the paw was *2* different colors of blue and the tribal heart around it was black. Even though the tattoo came out pretty nice I was a little disappointed because he did the whole paw all one color of blue and kind of made the the pad prints pointed so it sort of looks like a bear paw opposed to the picture which was a cat paw. :( So for him, no tip!

Also I think if the costs are overpriced then there is no need for a tip. Some places charge so much more then other places and they're no better then the cheaper place.

an apprentice is not a tattoo artist.
apprentices should only be working on volunteers (usually their friends) who are aware that they are apprentices.

if you got the tattoo just because it was free, then why even ask about giving a tip? you are too cheap to pay for quality work from a real tattoo artist.

if you are his/her friend and are volunteering for their benefit; then you are some strange kinda of friend to do so just to turn around and ask strangers on the internet about tipping!

Absolutely, it is their hard work and usually the tip will go to the guy who owns the shop, unless the owner is nice.

you can if you want, it's a really nice gesture and really supportive to him or her, but its not necessary cuz apprentices know they aren't master quality and probably don't deserve the tip

i would think so...the reason you tip i think is because they spent a lot of time and energy doing it and it's their own work. i would tip just as a courtesy, if anything
