Mathematically, any bet you make on a craps table is -EV which means it has a negative expected value. You are correct that the pass line along with 6 and 8 are the most favorable for the player, however they are still -EV, and if you make any of those wagers over time, you cannot win. Expected value can be calculated by finding the sum of all outcomes weighted by the likelyhood of each outcome.

Example: We are to flip a coin. Heads I pay you $1, Tails you pay me $2. Each outcome has a .5 chance, and my EV is calculated like this.

.5 (-$1) + .5($2) = +$0.50

Your EV should then be -$0.50 and looks like this.
.5($-2) + .5($1) = -$0.50

While on any one flip, you may win or lose, on average you will lose $0.50 per flip, and the more times we flip the coin, the closer the actual amount won or lost will come to being exactly -$0.50.

Casino games work in exactly the same manner. By not paying you the proper odds when you win a wager, they ensure you cannot win over a large number of trials.

There is no safe betting in craps. You can bet the pass line and bet odds but you'll be putting all your money on one number. You can bet inside 5,6,8,9. (increments of $5 for 5 and 9, $6 for 6 and 8). You can bet field no field (best odds imo). Hard ways favor house but decent payout if it hits (2 and 12 are single rolls only). When, the table is "off" C&E and the pass line are good bets to take. You can cover yourself (closest to break even) at that point only. Once the table is "on" you could win a lot or lose a lot. Most I've lost at craps is $600 and the most I've won is $15,000. Your money can go fast at craps so I tend not to play unless I've been winning at other games but some of my friends love craps so if they play I play with them. Always plan on bringing what you're willing to lose and no more.

There are alot of good books on gambling available. It's all about odds. Take two dice and see how many combinations you can make to roll a six, for example.
5-1
1-5
4-2
2-4
3-3
3-3
Now how many combinations make a 4:
1-3
3-1
2-2
2-2
Now you can see the difference in odds in throwing a particular number.
Now do it for a seven:
1-6
6-1
2-5
5-2
4-3
3-4
6-1
1-6

A seven is called "craps" if you roll it after coming out with another #
