When making fudge from scratch, it is very necessary to have a candy thermometer handy to use when cooking sugar. In order to achieve the desired consistency for fudge you need to cook it to the proper temperature. if you do not cook it to the right degree then the fudge will not set and you will be left with a sugary paste (as I'm sure you're well away of now) The thermometers are inexpensive and can usually be found in grocery stores and even the common department type stores such as walmart/target, etc.

Try putting it in the freezer for a while.
