After Christmas, the FIRST genuine markdowns are taken.
This not only clears holiday merchandise but reduces End Of Year Inventories, which are subject to state taxes.

January is the real clearance time. A second markdown is taken and by the end of January, the third and usually final , lowest markdowns are taken.
The first two markdowns should sell the goods, the THIRD markdown WILL sell the goods.
Sizes and colors will be sparse.
Spring merchandise is arriving, and they need inventory space. Sometimes, special purchases are bought for the end of January. If you are a good shopper, you will recognize the Regular goods that has been drastically reduced.
