The problem is: there is no single way to do it. It depends if you have Cable or Sat or Antenna, Do you have a DVD player, HD/BluRay, A game system (xBox, xBox360, PS2, PS3), etc.
It also depends on how old your equipment is. The current state of the art equipment could be hooked up this way:
- HDMI from all devices straight to the TV
- Optical from all the devices to the HT Receiver
Use the TV speakers for casual viewing, but turn on the receiver for more serious movie or game playing.

does TV have RCA jacks in the back? if so you can plug your stereo in it. you can use stereo for volume.
