Well, think about it this way. ALL mammals drink mild when they're born, but some grow into meat eaters, vegetarians, or omnivores. Cats by nature are meat eaters. As adults they don't need milk, and don't digest it well. It can give them stomach problems like diarrhea or nausea, so that's why people tell you not to give it to them. They LIKE it...but it isn't good for them.

Some cats can take it and some cannot.

Some are lactose intolerant.

You could give your cat a little bit and then watch it and keep a close eye on it. If it makes diarrhea or any other abnormal sickly poo poo, then no more milk.

If it does not, then it might be ok.

Milk can cause diarrhea and that leads to dehydration which can lead to death.

Milk is also not nutritious enough for a cat. It doesn't have all the necessary vitamins and minerals needed.

You could give it KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) or Kitten Formula. It is milk like and has nutrients kitty needs.

Just Born KMR is good and nutritious.

Well, most cats - especially adults - are lactose intolerant to *pasteurized* cow's milk. The same goes for humans, many that are lactose intolerant to pasteurized milk find they aren't intolerant to raw, or unpasteurized milk. So, I'm thinking that many ppl used to give cats milk w/o incident before pasteurization became common. Also, many ppl in the country still drink raw milk. I have been drinking raw milk for only 3 mos and already notice a difference in the way I feel.

Cats are lactose intolerant. While the cat might love the taste of the milk, it could be causing some issues inside. Also, it can make a cat unnecessarily overweight. Stick with water.

Just because people do something doesn't mean it is particularly good for the cat. Cow's milk is hard for cats to digest. If you have a real need to feed the cat milk, goat's milk is much better for them than cow's milk. You can get it in a can at the grocery store.

The problem with milk is that while some cats will have no problem with it some are lactose intolerant and will suffer from diarrhea etc..... My cat loves milk but I only give it to him as a once a month treat.

People also smoked cigarrettes for decades not realizing what damage they were doing. That is no justification for doing something that is now proven to be unhealthy. Lactose....is not metabolized well by cats. It taxes their system and can lead to diarrhea. this can in turn lead to dehydration, which isn't good for anyone. When you give an outdoor cat things like milk.....you don't get to see how their body processes it.....and I can tell you from years of experience with cats...it isn't good. it's just not.

Because people have assumed over the years that it was good for them. It is not. It's actually not too good for people either. It will give them digestive problems.....possibly the runs. Not a good thing for anyone!

i have no idea why not; i have never been told that, but if in doubt, just give them water and cat food. or give them cottage cheese instead of milk.
