He probably needs to see a pain management specialist. They can implant an electronic stimulator to offset the pain. I would think that he would have a concrete diagnosis by the time he had seen 10 doctors, but sometime you have to see a physician at a University or Medical School to get the answer.

Very gentle yoga is a very good way to relieve lower back pain--usually the hip area is very tight which causes the muscles along the lumbar spine to spasm. It must be done regularly, and there are other stretches that can be prescribed by a physical therapist or chiropractor.

Get some Biofreeze--it really helps reduce pain topically (spray or gel). If he works at a desk he needs to get up and stretch every 20 minutes. He should also sleep on his side with a pillow between his legs--all these will help. He may also need a new mattress, NOT a futon.

I went to a Doc for pain in my back and he taught me a exercise that really works but it might be hard to explain. First You lay down on the floor and put your right knee on the floor on your left side. Put your left hand on top of your right knee and hold it down. Keeping your right arm straight move it slowly from your left side to your right and then back. Try to flex your back, not your shoulder. Repeat with the other side. Do this several times until you can get your right hand all the way down to the floor on the right side without lifting your right knee off the floor. And the same with the other side. This will flex the lower back and for me makes the pain go away. I have been doing this once or week for several years and it still works for me.

Well my one friend also had this problem ..

Actually .. it happens when a backbone muscle moves or crack a part .. the only solution is surgery ..

but doc. here told my friend to leave coffe and tea and leave smoking too .. sleeping time must be between 6 to 8 hours and dont pull up some heavy thing ..

he did this and I think afta 1 and half .. that pain was totally reduced .. finished .. you can say its a homeopathy .. try this ..
GOD'll bless ..

How about trying a gravity traction system. I've seen one advertised on TV pretty cheap.
