I don't need anything fancy, it's for a desktop that my daughter will be using for playing games and maybe surfing the net every now and then. I thought about going with an older version of Windows, but I'm not sure what would be my best bet. Any help would be appreciated!

Why did you install a new HDD. Was it to get a bigger one or was it faulty? If it was to get a bigger one you can get a technician to transfer the OS from the old HDD to the new one. If it was faulty (crashed) then you need to buy a new Operating System. XP SP2 is almost outdated but would be the best option for your daughter to install games on.

1. Buy a replacement Recovery disk from the PC vendor.

2. Buy a Windows disk from nearest computer store.

3. If the PC has a holographic COA sticker on it with the CD key, borrow an EXACT copy of the full Windows version (original, SP1, SP2) and install it, but use your CD key, not their's. This is a long shot.

4. Get Linux Mint, free from:

It doesn't play Windows games but has many free ones for your daughter to try and Linux doesn't have any known malware, so it's safer for her to use.

The computer has no operating system at all? Has it ever been used for the internet? Not sure if it will work at all
