The importance is that man, by "Christian" standards, is inherently sinful. If Mary had be impregnated by a man, then Jesus would not have been "pure and free of sin"therefore unable to fulfill the "Christian" prophecies and to fulfill the law. There is nothing sinful about sex. This is purely in relation to pregnancy, not sex itself.

It was important for Mary to be a virgin for the following reasons:
(and the word used in the original language of the gospel was only used to mean a virgin not a young girl, but that is a different discussion)
The sin nature is passed on from generation to generation through the seed of the man (the seed of Adam). The sacrifice for sin had to be sinless (perfect) so therefore the Saviour would have to be a man but also not have the sin nature passed on to Him. And the only way to do that would be through a virgin birth. The virgin birth was prophesied through out the Old Testament, going as far back as Genesis. Without the virgin birth Christ does not remain sinless. And if Christ is not sinless the sacrifice was not perfect. And if the sacrifice was not perfect then there was no atonement made for our sin. And without the atonement being made for our sin there is no salvation. The virgin birth is a foundational doctrine of Christianity take it away and the rest of the doctrines begin to crumble as well. Not to mention the fact that the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah are also not fulfilled. HOpe that answers your question.

Nothing sinful about sex, otherwise how could Mary and Joseph have other sons and daughters born to them? And why would God make us all able to have sex if that was the case?
It showed that Mary had no other children before she gave birth to Jesus known as the Christ. It fulfilled the prophecy that therefore Jesus was to be a first-born son.
Do you understand the significance? Over 70 prophecies from where he was to be born, how he was to live, how he was to be called, his mission of bringing all people to know of God, how he was to die, what was going to happen when he was crucified, and his resurrection; they're all there in the Old Testament.
But I wonder if you believe in coincidences, like others believe in fate?

It's not that sex is sinful as much as the prophesies stated that Jesus would be born of a virgin. If she wasn't, it would be easy to think that it was really Joseph's baby, and that would therefore not make Jesus the Son of God. By Mary being a virgin, it shows that God was able to make a virgin pregnant. Without her virginity, Jesus would simply not be Jesus.

There is nothing sinful about sex if you are applying it in the way that God teaches us to and that goes for all things..not just sex. God wouldn't create something for a sinful purpose. Mary's virginity is a sign to mankind of the deity of her chlid Jesus. But it also shows that the blessed of the Lord will rely only on Him in all that they do and not corrupt themselves with the ways of the world or the doctrines of men.

Nothing is sinful about sex between the messiah's mother and father. In fact, in Judaism the Messiah is born from a married Jewish man and wife in the usual way. Not from some god swooping down and impreganting a virgin, which comes from ancient pagan savior stories, not Judaism. Don't pay any attention to people who point at our Torah and say "See! It says virgin right there!" No, it doesn't, nor has a virgin birth concept ever existed in Judaism.
If you are interested in learning about the real Jewish messiah, please visit the following Jewish links:

P.S. Please ignore those who have been incorrectly taught that Jesus fulfilled any Torah prophecies about the Messiah. He did not. Nor are most of the prophecies the Christians have there legitimate. There are only 16 or so original prophecies given by God on Mt. Sinai to the Jews, which we still have. The Church falsely attributes other verses which are not, and then feeds this to its followers. To do this it also deliberately mistranslated many verses, for instance the virgin verse and the "god called his name mighty, wonderous, etc., and the government shall be upon his shoulder., etc, etc, etc." none of those actually say that in Hebrew, either the words have been mistranslated or the sentence has been changed around as well.

Well, for one, if we didn't mention it, we'd be all "Yeah, right. It was probably just Joseph's son."
And for another, she wasn't married yet. So if we didn't say she was a virgin, then people would think that it was possible that god might have chosen an unchaste woman to be the earthly mother of His son. We wouldn't want that, now would we?
Sex isn't sinful, so long as it's within marriage.

The christian PR machine decided that they had to go one better than the Romulus and Rhemus myth (being raised by a wolf) and the Buddha being raised as a prince before tossing it all away to become an enlighened pauper.
The Judaic-Christian-Islamic religions (and some others) are real killjoys - anything which made you feel good was made a sin. (Although wine seems to have slipped through the net - mmmm ... but they probably invented the hangover!)

To Christians it's important that Jesus fulfilled all the prophesies. This is how they 'prove' he was Jesus. This is not important to me because I think it's Jesus' -teachings- that are important, not whether he was the son of God, born of a virgin, resurrected or any of that stuff.
The 'virgin' prophesy is from Isaiah, and it is misinterpreted. The word Isaiah used meant 'young woman' but was mistranslated to mean 'virgin'. He said the young woman would bear a son who would be called Emmanuel, meaning 'God is with us'. Jesus wasn't named Emmanuel either.
But there are lots of Christians, even, who don't believe Mary was a virgin or even that Christ was resurrected.

The two have nothing to do with one another. A virgin birth was a miracle. Sex is not sinful in God's eyes. He didn't create us to watch our kind die out in eighty years. He just gave us guidelines for the things we do in life.
