shortning melts down when cooked therefor you should use approx 2/3 cup of butter or oil

you would use the same amount of butter. The oil is a different story... If you're using the shortening or oil to fry something in, 3/4 cup is fine. But if you're making cookies...you won't get the same results if you substitute a liquid for a solid. You won't even have identical results if you use butter...because butter is not solid a room temperature, whereas shortening is.

So...while you can replace shortening with equal amount of butter, the results won't be exactly the same. I would not recommend replacing shortening with oil unless you are an experienced enough cook to make the other adjustments that would become necessary...and since you're asking this question, my guess is that you are not...so don't try it!

3/4 cup butter minus about 1/2 tsp salt from your recipe. Oil does not work well to replace shortening in baking.

this should make a great pie crust: Ingredients: 2 cups flour 1 1/2 teaspons salt 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup cold water Directions: 1. Sift flour and salt into a bowl. 2. Pour the vegetable oil in a measuring cup and pour the water on top of the oil. Don’t stir them together. 3. Dump the oil and water on top of the flour and salt. 4. Stir the ingredients with a fork until it is blended enough so that you can form the dough into two balls. 5. Use a rolling pin to roll out each ball into a circle of about 12 inches across. (You may want to put the dough between two pieces of wax paper to make it easier to roll it out.) 6. Carefully place the crust into your pie pan and get ready to make a delicious pie.
