yes - it's getting ridiculous!
if i go out to dinner, it's to enjoy my meal and converse with the people i'm with. i shouldn't have to raise my voice to make myself heard to someone two feet away from me!!!
if the music is driving you nuts, tell the owner or manager. they should be catering to the customers, not trying to deafen them with cheesy pop music.

I dont think this is a case of should they play music. They should pay more attention to what is played, how it is played and at what volume and where on the premises. With vision music could become a better way to enhance an experience rather than being subjective to employees within the organisation. Music is abused by people who dont understand it.

It drives me crazy. I frequently complain about it. I go for a drink at the local pub with a couple of mates, and the wretched plasma TV is on with non-stop sport, AND there is music playing. But there's too much noise anyway, too much talking, too many mobile phones, too much traffic, everything. My own home is great - I live in a small house at the end of a long footpath, so there are no people going past, no cars going past, nothing. So I shouldn't complain, really! But away from home, yes, there is just noise, noise, noise ...

I think it depends on the place. I don't mind only if the music is appropriate for the venue and low in volume. I personally love music but at my job I play music that is pretty neutral and low in volume. I guess music is suppose to also help the the setting/atmosphere or not.

If music is too loud in an establishment, I just won't go in. For instance, American Eagle clothing stores have this loud music. Do I shop there?
Nope. I sure don't.
Soft music is fine. Loud? Not fine...unless you're in a nightclub.

I totally agree ban the bloody lot or better still make it highly illegal, anyone found playing any sort of music any where should be taken out into the street and shot.
better still ban everything I mean there is always some kind of complaint about something or another so..apart from eating sleeping, working, and personal care..make everything else highly illegal and have any man woman or child put to death found braking these rules.

I have a thing against this also, but they,:THE OWNERS" say this helps bring in the younger crowd.. It is he same every where, thanks to, being "political crudeness" or should I say correctness for this. This will offend the young crowd, if they don't ,if you are older and get offended, they tell you basically to stay at home, in a nice way.
Wonder what would happen if we did?. also they think that who has the money now.,so maybe they're just trying to make a living. I find it best just to gang up and meet at one of our house then we can eat and talk. lots a fun.

Yes perhaps it is because I am getting older that sometimes the MUSAK is an impediment. I am not saying all music is bad it's the none music MUSAK I hate. In the same way as i hate constant Christmas carols being used to increase sales

I don't get that where I go, I can't think of any restaurant I've been in lately that had loud music on. Maybe I'm going to the wrong places?

Yeah, I get sick of music in public places. In Ikea they play it so loudly and it's so horrible that you can't think straight or concentrate on what you're supposed to be buying. It's so distracting. I complained once and they turned it down. It was so loud that my husband couldn't concentrate on measuring the tv cabinet that we were trying to buy. He just got p*ssed off and left in the end.
