Doesn't not believing in god mean you don't believe in yourself (or anything/being) as a god?

Okay, read my bio and you will find out I am an atheist. But people tell me (and other atheists) that we are making ourselves our own gods, and I was wondering how this made the least bit of sense.

I have heard this a lot from christians, that we worship the self, or the "unholy trinity (me, myself, and I)." I suppose they think that not believing in god is a sign of arrogance. I think there is nothing more arrogant then believing that an all powerful, all knowing god keeps tally of your shortcomings and gives a cr*p about what you do with your privates. But that is just me.

And I take accountability for my own sins and my own morality. I do not rely on a murdered Jew to save me.

Doesn't not believing in God just not believing in God? Period. Why does that imply anything else. However, to get at the Truth, you have to get rid of religion and beliefs. Truth, God, Reality is Here right Now. If you think what the present Reality is and have a belief of what Reality is using religion, your not experiencing Reality, or God. Having an ego that holds on to itself and is conditioned by a culture somewhere that's imprisoned you, you can't know what God really is.

People intend to misunderstand God because trying to understnad God is like trying to understand all the secrets of the universe. However, if you try to understand God a personal level, you will find it bit more plausible. That being said, god is nothing extraordinary or mysterious, it's something or someone that controls your moral discisions and choices in life. If that is you, than you are your own god.

It doesn't.

It's just that some people can't wrap their minds around the concept of not believing in the Sky Bully, so they try to figure out how they can maintain their believe that EVERYONE really DOES believe, even if they say they don't.

I see a lot of nonsense about us: We pretend not to believe because we love sin. That's always a goodie.

Some people just can't imagine that it's possible to live one's life without worshipping some imaginary monster or other.

The fall from grace in the Garden of Eden resulted when Adam and Eve decided to take the position "I will be the one who is in charge of what is right and what is wrong." Unseating God from His rightful throne is not a matter of having no morals or being a "bad" person, it's a matter of taking away His authority to be Lord over me. That puts me in His place.

It's not a matter of saying "I am god - I created all things from nothing."

No. Not believing in God can mean not believing in any gods of any religion but that doesn't mean you can't make your own. Many times "God" refers to the God of Christianity, or another religion. Sometimes people don't believe in any religion so they set themselves up with their own gods or they make themself "a god" so they make their own rules and go by that.

In the area of morality, one who believes in God had God's word and/or law as the basis for his moral code and that basis is objective. For one who does not believe in or denies God, the basis for his moral code (which is subjective) is his own intellect.

Hence, in essence, the atheist has replace God with his own intellect and therefore made himself his own 'god'.

>> How does not believing in a god makes someone
>> "setting theirself up as god"?

Here's the philosophy along those lines... Since God is the one whom Ultimately has the Power to define morality and control our destinies, then by not believing in God you're really saying that you think you have the power to define morality and control your own destiny. Thus, that makes you your own god.

God bless.

Why would you believe in yourself as a God? Not believing in God has nothing to do with belief in yourself.

There is nothing on this planet that man has not created, including a God, It is man that is the real God here, he creates his life, and he creates the reality in which he lives that life.
