One way --- and do not drive while doing this ----Turn the Nav function off.

Touch the minus bar on the upper left of the screen to zoom out and thus get a bigger map.

Touch "where to" and select "browse map" - not from that window but from the "more options", second window , that comes up

Touch any of the browse arrows and the in and out zoom thingy. Find a road or spot that goes around the road that you want to avoid. Push "go" and let the Garmin take you there.

You can change your route and destination any time that U want to. To revert to original directions just select "where to" and then select "recent selections". Before selecting "go" you might want to select "stop navigation". Otherwise Garmin will ask if you want to continue to the final destination via the new destination. The result of that is that your destination time of arrival will be waaay off.

Don't worry, You cannot break, confuse, mess-up or get chewed out by the Garmin. Play with it! Just not while driving ?!
