Actually, we could have won the war. The problem of "us" not winning the war was between LBJ and our Secretary of State Robert Mac. They spend most of their time telling who could drop what type of bomb on what place, etc., etc. rather than allowing the field commanders to do their job.
If they would have drop about 50,000 grunts on the trail, that would have solved a lot of "our" problems. Therefore, the bombing campaigns along the trail would have been more effected. Thus, bring an end to the war in our favor. Even a former VC stated that if we were to have dropped personal off on the trail rather than only having a bombing campaign on it that it would have probably changed the out come of the war.
I make this statement base on comments made to me by the people who served there.

Obviously not. We lost and nothing anywhere nearly as bad as we thought was going to happen, actually happened.
SE Asia did not all become communist, China did not take over North Vietnam, and millions did not die in mass genocide after the war was over.
Yes, there was some score-settling, but on the other hand the North Vietnamese did cross into Cambodia to stop Pol Pot and the "Killing Fields", something we never bothered to do or didn't really care too much about at the time.
The war was not winnable, no matter what anyone tells you, because...because?
Because to win a war the conquered people must bend to the will of the conqueror and accept subjugation. The North Vietnamese never showed the slightest sign of doing so after 30 years (!!!) of fighting the Japanese, the French and the Americans.

Yeah, in a way I guess.
The thing is, the Northern Vietnamese attacked Southern Vietnam. The French at the time occupied Vietnam. America is an ally to France, so they had to help them out. So did other countries. When America got there, they found out that Vietnam can fall in the hands of the Communists. So, America then says that if Vietnam falls to the Communists, then all of Asia will also. So then the war raged on and protests were overwhelming back in the states. Finally, America withdrew and Vietnam became a Communist country.

Necessary? YES! The idea was to help our ally, the South Vietnamese. However, Lyndon Johnson had other ideas. He sold out the American soldiers, so they couldn't win, by disallowing the Generals to command the war, and ignoring major ports, where the USSR was supplying the Northern Vietnamese with weaponry. He would not allow US to bomb those ports so the US Military could stop the flux of weapons delivered. Lyndon Johnson had us go into this war for his personal profit, having only one company allowed to make unnecessary equipment for Troops in Vietnam. The company being Brown and Root, and his wife Lady Bird Johnson owning 1/3 of their stocks! I hate the truth, too!

hi
Most Americans don't believe they lost the war. They like to believe they won that war and then pulled out -- it was negotiated to a truce and cease fire agreement at which point the U.S. left the country. The communists then broke the truce and cease fire agreement and crushed the fledgling country of South Vietnam. Those loyal to S. Vietnam never forgave the U.S. for hanging them out to rot in the sun as they did.
The American media is to blame for having made it an "Unpopular" war. Just as they are doing to the war in Iraq. So, if you like to think in terms of "Honor" and "Dignity," in helping to support a country that wants to remain "Free" and democratic, I suppose it was a "Good and Just" war. If you care instead to think in terms of "Colonialization" or "mercenary for hire," then it was a "Dirty" war. Any way you cut this one, the media swayed public opinion and the citizens demanded a complete and total withdrawl. A truce was negotatied and America left. Two years later, the communists broke the truce and invaded.

kind of. After the french pulled out, the yanks agreed to try to take control. In the vietcong, the yanks were overwelmed by gurilla warfare. and finally, after alot of trouble and wasted supplies and lives, the yanks pulled out too.
Thats pretty much it.
