Hugh Nibley wrote an Ensign article in 1972.

"Islam owed its impact on the world and its great appeal to its followers to the electrifying announcement that God had again spoken from the heavens and that after 600 years of silence the voice of a prophet was again heard in the land. It was this announcement that aroused the scorn and derision of the world and brought down storms of denunciation and persecution on the head of that prophet. Here indeed is a closer parallel to the case of Joseph Smith; in fact, early Mormon leaders saw no reason why Mohammed should not be considered a true prophet, for there have been many prophets, great and small, in the past whose words are not in the Bible.

But the striking resemblance turns almost at once into an equally striking contrast when the Moslems announce that Mohammed is the last of the prophets and that there can be no prophet after him. “When a doctrine is sealed,” writes an eminent Moslem scholar, “it is complete, and there can be no further addition. The holy Prophet Mohammed closed the long line of Apostles. … there has been and will be no prophet after Mohammed.” 5 Thus Islam ignored its one unique advantage over conventional Judaism and Christianity, the joyful tidings that God still speaks from the heavens through his prophets."

Very interesting question. There is no doubt that Mormons believe that Mohammed was inspired of God. In a statement made by the first presidency in 1978, the Church proclaimed: "The great religious leaders of the world such as Mohammed, Confucius, and the Reformers, as well as philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and others, received a portion of God's light. Moral truths were given to them by God to enlighten whole nations and to bring a higher level of understanding to individuals."

There is a difference, however, between being inspired of God and being a prophet of God, with the authority to act in God's name. Regarding whether or not Mohamed was a true prophet, the Mormons Church has no official position, so you'll find varying opinions:

1. The vast majority have never given the question any thought and have no opinion one way or the other.

2. Of the remaining minority, most would say Mohamed was inspired of God but not a prophet. They believe the last prophets were the apostles of the New Testament.

3. A small minority would be open to the idea that Mohamed was a true prophet, but that his teachings have since been corrupted. These would speculate that Mohamed did originally teach Christ's divinity and position as Savior of the world, but that his subsequent followers modified/abandoned those teachings. I seem to recall reading once that this opinion was had among a few church leaders in the early 20th century, but that it was never taught as doctrine or accepted as “official” by the Mormon community.

All About Mormons has a great answer. Based on what I've studied, which isn't much since college, I would agree with him, that Mohammed was inspired but not a true prophet, because he would have needed to testify of Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

No.
Mormons believe in the Prophets of the King James Bible and the Book of Mormon and in the Latter Day Prophets of their religion Joseph Smith and in the prophetic office of their Presidents and Apostles of their Church

Mormonism and Islam have commonalities like believing that trinitarian Christianity is "apostate" and misinterprets Christ but Islam rejects Mormon "eternal progression',"Polytheistic henotheism",the Godhead having separate beings in it, "As Man is God once was and as God is Man may become" anthropology and cosmology.

Many Muslims actually think most wrongly that Trinitarian Christians have LDS Mormon theology: 3 gods(Father Son and Spirit as separate beings and not distinct persons of one being), a Divine Mother who is the consort of the Father, that God the Father has a physical or corporeal body, and much more.

LDS Mormonism is theologically more distant from Historic Christianity and Historic Rabbinic Judaism than Islam is to either of the latter.

Speaking as a Mormon - no, Mohammed was not a prophet. All true prophets of God testify of Christ - Mohammed denied the divinity of Jesus Christ and is therefore a false prophet.

We do try to seek truth and virtue wherever it is found -- but we do not consider Islam to contain the gospel of Christ - and that is the only way to return to God.

It is absolutely untrue that Mormons believe in Mohammed. We worship the Same God as all Christian religions. We take the sacrament started by Christ. Our Church that you call mormons is really the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. So our church bears his name. All The books we study are about God and Jesus Christ. Mohammed was a real man for sure, and a religious man. He is not a God.

We believe in more of the bible than any other church on earth. When Paul talks of baptism for the dead in 2nd Corinthians, we are the only church that follows that.

When the bible talks of the many places that we might inherit and compares those places to the Sun, Moon and stars in their glory, we comprehend and understand that.

We believe in the concept of the rapture, but are aware that the earth is to be cleansed and be changed for the millenium. While others believe they are

I would certainly hope you premise about the Mormons believing Mohammed was a prophet sent by God is wrong, and so it is. It's bad enough that they follow the prophet J. Smith.
