A beautiful tabby cat ran right into the headlights of my Ford Thunderbird. I was going about 50mph and had no time to react. It felt like both left tires went directly over him but by the time I got turned around it was gone. I know I hit it but what happened to it? I hope it's not suffering.

It may have... Cats are very flexible so it's possible it's still alive. Just keep telling yourself that it lived. It's the only way to get over it.. I hit a dog once and it ran off.. I drove around looking for it but never found it. And on top of that, these little kids (the ones that ran him out into the road, I was only going like 30) that saw me hit it made me feel like CRAP! I felt HORRIBLE. I just told the kids that the doggie was alright if he ran away and kept telling myself the same. A few years later I hit a cat in the neighborhood. It was super dark, no street lights and it was a black cat. When I ran over that cat, he stayed dead in the road... That was the worst feeling ever. I cried that whole day. People at work thought a family member died but I eventually had to get the image out of my head and convince myself it was an accident. The poor cat looked like one of my cats...

At 50mph it is highly unlikely that it survived and probably died instantly. It was most likely thrown from the road or had muscle reactions that cause the cat to flop for a few seconds.
You did the correct thing by going to look for it. It was not your fault and there is nothing more than can be done.

Either could have happened. My poor daughter saw her beloved min-pin hit right in front of her eyes. The driver never stopped. The dog died bleeding in the street.

On the other hand, my step-mother's cat was hit by a car and it broke it's back, but it survived and walks like a raccoon now - all hunched over. The vet says it isn't in pain and it was hit about 8 years ago.

So you never know. One thing I can say, if you think you hit something, please look around for a house that it might have come from. My coworker's dog got out - it got hit by a 21-year old girl who was late for her college class. She never stopped. Later that day, on her way home, she did stop at one person's house (a person she knew) and told them. A few days later, word finally got around that a dog, fitting the description of my coworker's dog, had been hit. They went out and found the dog about a mile from the road where it was hit. Had it received medical attention the day it was hit, perhaps it could have survived. :( We'll never know.

This is one reason I keep my animals inside. Also, as drivers, we all end up hitting something at one point or another. If I ever hit anything, (luckily for me, it's only been small wild animals - birds) I say a prayer for it and apologize to it. There's not much else you can do. :( Good luck. :)

One can't really tell unless you know what damage was done. It's possible that it survived, but it could have done so only momentarily; enough to get to the side of the road and find a place to retire.

I had a cat when I was young that was hit by a car. It survived, but only after spending weeks at the veterinarian, and costing my parents a good deal of money.

I don't think it's likely that the cat you hit survived, but I don't think it's suffering now.

these things happen.

my hubby hit a cat, that ran smack into his hubcap. he was going about 50km/h or less. the cat came out of the bushes, but by the time we seen her it was too late.

either, the car made him fly into a ditch etc (which is what happened to us, we found him, and buried him).

or he ran underneath the car to the other side.

either way, there isn't anything you can do now. just know it happens. it will bother you for a while. but you will get passed it.

it's nice to know you cared. some ppl hit them and don't even think about it.

Cats are super fast...you might not have hit it...Did you hear a noise? One time my toe was run over and it didn't even break lo but that has nothing to do with this....Don't sweat it it's not your fault...Cat's are dumb...lol but if i had to say I bet hes fine. Check around the neighborhood you were in and ask peopel with cats...describe the cat and make sure hes okay if you don't want to feel guilty.

That is awful. I hope it died instantly, but seeing as you say it had disappeared it's probably somewhere dying, or hopefully has died there is unfortunately no way it wouldn't have suffered.

I'm afraid that a human could barely survive something like that, let alone a cat.
