Agree with the first poster for watching films but Bluray had twice the data storage capability of HDDVD. If you're putting a burner in your PC, get the Bluray.
Also, Bluray has more content available (more movies) than HDDVD. It's about 70% Bluray/30% HDDVD.
If you're looking to buy a player, you are going to be frustrated when the title you want is only available in the other format. This is why I own an LG player. It plays both Bluray and HDDVD. It costs a bit more, but I get to choose from 100% of available content. :)

They both use a blue-laser to read, but BD (Blu-ray) has a narrower pitch, so it has bigger capacity.
In terms of movie quality, they both use the same codecs (WMV, MPEG-2, or H.264) so they are pretty much the same.
HD DVDs are cheaper to make. There are big steaks in royalties (read $$) , that's why the competing formats.

who makes money when you buy them. They're basically the same quality, but different formats, so they're incompatible with each other.
