cover her heavily pregnant self as she traveled to Bethlehem? After all, even though she and Joseph were in on the deal, no one else was. She did not want to be attacked for being a "fallen woman", which people in those times were real big on doing. So is it possible that Jesus' mama, just for the trip, disguised herself head to toe with a burqua? Its for sure that no one could have figured out who she was. Of course it is true that the Lord went along for the ride. Still, come to think of it, might the donkey have been veiled as well? Just as a precaution? Somehow I keep flashing on the "Shrek" donkey! Believers, what say you? I say: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Mary dressed far more like a Muslim woman than a Christian woman

She wore hijab all the time

Jewish women at the time did not wear a burqa. They would have worn some belted ankle-length tunic that covered her upper arms. As a married woman she would have also worn as a minimum, a headscarf, probably knotted in the back, and possibly another thinner veil over that. Generally, the face would not have been covered. Only harlots covered their faces to preserve their anonimity. The upper body would have also been covered with a shawl, and she may have worn some kind of knee-length coat against the cold.

The complete body-covering clothes is actually unique to modern Islam, possibly as an extremist reaction

They were Jews, not Christians, although neither group precludes them from wearing a burqa. There is not rule that says Jews shall not wear burqas. I suspect the burqa didn't exist back then, but she earsily could have been well wrapped up for both modesty and to hide the pregnancy.

There were no Christians at that t ime. Mary was a Jew and followed the Old Testament (Torah) laws.
Islam didn't exist then, either

She was not a Christian, she was a Jew and so was Joseph. After Yeshua died for their sins, they likely believed according to what the Angel spoke to them, and then became Messianic Jews. Messianic Jews are not "Christians" because "Christian" is a term used by Gentile believers in Christ.

Both Mary and Joseph were Jewish, and the burka had never been a Jewish custom; the Muslims invented that 600 years later...
