Jesus Himself said the only thing that matters is believing in Him. Because, no one can be saved by works or their own efforts at trying to "live like Christ".
The only way to be saved and go to heaven and not eternal hell is by believing that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Right there the Bible gives you the answer, there it is from the Bible itself. Doesn't matter what anyone else says, the Bible is clear. Believing this about Jesus saves. Acting a certain way does not save anyone.

It is impossible to live like Christ without first believing in his name. Belief is more than a simple acknowledgement that He was a historical figure. I can believe in Jesus as a historical figure with no impact in my life (and did for many years). No, to have true belief, it is necessary to recognize our sinful, fallen natures, that we have sinned against a holy and just God, and that Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross for the remission of our sins and that He rose again on the third day. If you repent of your sins, ask forgiveness for them, and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then you will be empowered to live a Christ-like life.

Choosing to call oneself a Christian means following the examples that Jesus set forth. This would include living your life with the virtues and values of kindness, patience, fairness, taking a real interest in your fellowman, and above all giving credit to our loving creator. Jesus said his followers would be recognized by their works, meaning our loving actions :-) With those things in mind, he meant being a Christian is a DOING thing :-)

Without believing in the example what possible motive would you have for following it? Nonsensical question.

To live like. Even satan 'believes' in Christ.
Nowhere did Jesus say that faith alone will save you - that came from Martin Luther.
