Mary was from the village of Magdala near Tiberius. The one answer above that disputes this refers to a website that allows some of the more legendary information that is very most likely not true. All the Bible says about her is that she was a devoted follower of Jesus after he cast out seven evil spirits from her. What these spirits were are not mentioned. The woman taken in adultery and the woman who anointed Jesus's feet were not Mary. There is no mention at all of any past indiscretions on her part. The fact that she is referred to by her town name, indicates that she was not married or connected to a family of her own. She is mentioned as part of some events in the Gospels, which shows her commitment to the cause. Any other information is purely legendary.

There was no evidence that she was a prostitute, but she had behaved badly before her conversion. There is some indication that she was married and an adulteress. She lived in Caesaria, but it is not known if she was born there. Magdalene implies she was born in Magdala.
She was a woman of means and probably was part of the more liberal crowd that had dealings with the Romans.

Mary Magdalene was born in the district of Magdala, 2 miles north of Tiberius, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, which is where her family's castle, Magdalon, stood. Her parents were reputed to be noble, or, as some say, royal descendants of the House of David. On the death of her father, Syrus, she and her brother and sister inherited vast riches and possessions in land, which were equally divided between them. Mary abandoned herself to luxurious pleasures and became at length so notorious for her extravagant lifestyle, that she was known throught the area only as 'The Sinner'. The Bible, however, never explicitly says that Mary Magdalene was ever a prostitute at any point in her life. One of the 7 demons expelled from her by Jesus was 'Fornication', but this was probably brought about by her lifestyle, rather than prostitution.

She was from Magdala. At that time, single women were named after the town they were born in. Married women would be name after their husbands, such as, Mary, wife of Joseph. She was not a prostitute, the Bible never says this. She was possessed by demons, which Christ drove out.

There is some controversy about Mary Magdalene. Some say she was a prostitute. Others claim that the church has altered the bible to portray her as a prostitute to denigrate the role of a female leader, when she really was a wealthy and powerful follower and influencer of Jesus.

"Magdalene" means "from Magdala" so she would be from a village or area called Magdala. Yes, she was a prostitute. Some people identify her with Martha's sister Mary but others say they were 2 different women.

She was born and lived in Magdala and was NOT a prostitute. She apparently had "spirits," which were exorcised, which may mean she had some mental illness. She was probably a woman of means.

She was born in Magdala, they didn't have last names back then, and it doesn't specifically say that she was a prostitute

She was from Magdela. There were connotations that she was a prostitute, but the Bible does NOT come straight out and says that.
