You can find an answer in the Bible to just about any problem or situation. How come it's the last place people go to for comfort and answers to their problems. I understand that not everyone is a christian, but even some christians forget all about the Bible when they have a problem. I just what your thoughts on this because I get a lot of encouragement from reading my Bible.

Because human nature tells us we can do things on our own. The devil tempts us we drugs, alchohal, smoking, and cutting, and lots more things that he tells us will make us feel better or tell us that is the solution to our problems and we think we have it all worked out but cutting/drugs ect. make things much worse!! i just went through a hard time in life and i went everywhere but the bible i thought i could do it on my own and i experienced w/ cutting becuase i was stressed out and cutting did make me feel good for then but in the end it caused more stress by keeping it from people and then having to tell my parents. I was just blessed to have family and friends to help me through these hard times and that care that i was hurting myself.....but i was also hurting jesus. the Bible says "Your body is the temple of the Lord" and so when we hurt ourselves we are realy hurting Jesus!! Hope it helps!!

Because historically, going to the bible for answers creates more questions.

The bible can be interpreted to justify all actions, because God both condones and admonishes people for doing them.

When I have a problem, I find it is far more healthy to go to a person who has been in similar situations and learn from their experience.

Reading the bible for answers, is a solo expedition, and it allows people to come up with their own interpretations.

For instance. A mentally disturbed man who attended our church when I was young hung himself. He did it because another church member, was tiring of his questions, and told him consult the bible. He opened it up and read about how Judas hung himself for the guilt he felt at betraying Jesus. He wrote a note, and did the same.

You can "find" answers in just about ANY book, if you get enough philosophical and symbolic with the words. I could credit the 3 Little Pigs for giving me hard work ethics if I wanted to. The only thing that makes the Bible "special" is 1) your pre-conceived notion that it's a time-tested book, and 2) the volume of words and characters that make it vague and varied enough for more interpretations.

Having said, I simply do NOT find the Bible to be comforting nor a good source of advice. Its recurring themes of self-loathing, odd violence, angry deities, and denial of any pleasure, are not things I follow. In fact, I find that they just make matters worse.

I don't go to the Bible for answers, because I remember what has been said, out of context of course. I know what I am suppose to do in every circumstance. Sometimes I don't, because my anger or something else takes over, and then a couple of times a year, I have to go back and appologize, because that is what my conscience tells me that I am suppose to do.

Well, no offense but the bible is biased towards people from 2000+ years ago. Since slavery was considered morally ok for them then it worked in that era, but in modern day it can only answer simple life delema's that are best attained by experience anyway. It actually causes more problems in the long run because of its datedness.

people used to use the bible to answer their problems a lot more six hundred years ago than they do today.

they turned to the bible for help with curing diseases, improving the health of their crops and cattle, and for their knowledge of what the weather would be like in the weeks ahead.

but as william blake once wrote:

'the fool who persists in his folly will become a wise man.'

I agree... The Bible consults all problems! Some people (not all) think they can fix it on their own! I have done this too, but the Bible makes it sssssoooooo much easier! I'm glad you have faith!

I agree with Donna F. How can an ancient book from 2000-4000 years ago solve the problems of today, when it was written to people in a completely different world/society?

I find the Bible is very relevant to solving today's problems.

A lot of people don't have regular bible study. They don't know how to find the answer. Jesus used the word of God to fight off His temptation and David wrote, your word have i hidden in my heart that i might not sin against you. Thats why you should read it every day, so when you are in those situations, you remember and then you claim the promises of God.
