someone answered a question today- "I am not a Christian, but a bible believer- and in the bible there is nothing that says that there is eternal torment." Just interested to see if anyone can come up with chapter and verse. I can guarantee you it is not there.

Mauri- I am asking due to the fact that more than one person says this, and I just want to know where they get their info- because people are misrepresenting the Bible- if I was misrepresenting something someone said, I would understand why they would ask me to prove why I feel the way I do

Ambassador for Christ- where in Revelation or anyplace else does the bible say that the rapture will occur in 2011? Didn't Jesus say- "No one knows the time , except the Father?

For those who think that I should not ask this question, because if I knew I would not have too- then please do not ask questions of me and other Christians if you think you know the answer already- and I can tell you there are many that do this= if someone tells me that there is proof something is in scripture- what is wrong for asking for proof?

I guarantee that the Bible mentions hell several times. Try Matthew 5:22, Luke 16:23, and 2 Peter 2:4.
Heaven is also mentioned frequently: Luke 18:22, for instance.
Look in a concordance, people.
Also: the Bible also tells us that no man knows when the end of time will be.
Apologies for the above sarcasm. Merry Christmas.

Actually I can show you were it says that several places.
Dan 12:2 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
John 5: 28"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
Isaiah 66:24
And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
Mark 9:44
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9:46
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9:48
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Rev 20:11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
I'd suggest you read the complete chapter in which each of these passages are located.

Check it out: there is a heaven and a hell. Hell doesn't mean a place of eternal torment...it simply means the grave (look it up in a Strong's concordance). Everyone who dies goes to hell technically, because they go to the grave. The bible says "The dead know nothing." The bible speaks of resurrections (especially in Revelations). After a person is dead, they remain dead until Jesus Christ returns to ressurect them...then they must be judged. They will either be given eternal (everlasting) life, or be sentenced to the Lake of Fire (mentioned in the bible) to burn up, die, and be gone forever. As for Heaven, it is the place where God has his throne. The bible says, and I have to paraphrase because I don't have my bible with me, that "No man has ascended into heaven, except He who came from heaven." We do not ascend to heaven. After Jesus returns, the earth will be purified by fire. The bible speaks of a new heaven and a new earth. He will bring his kingdom to the earth. His kingdom is also known as the new Jerusalem.
Sorry I can't give references...don't have access to my bible right now. But, if you look up the phrases "hell" and "heaven" in your concordence, you'll find these scriptures. Also, study things for yourself, don't believe just me or anyone else! God will reveal things to you if you ask for Him to, and if you seek in earnest.

By your own version of this story the person said "there is nothing that says there is eternal torment." They are commenting on the lack of information on the subject. That is not the same as saying "the Bible says there is no eternal torment," which is what you are asking for. No one can quote where something isn't said.

What you're asking and what the person said are two different things. The answer just said that the bible didn't say that there was a heaven and a hell. You're asking where it says there isn't a heaven and a hell. Not talking about something and saying that something doesn't exist are not the same.

Wow, you need to learn the basics of logic.
You quoted somebody as saying that there is no mention of eternal torment in the Bible. That's NOT the same as saying that the Bible explicitly claims there is no such thing as heaven and hell.

NOWHERE!!!! It never says that at all! I asked my priest this and he said that it never said that. He has read every page and fraction of the Holy Bible, and nowhere does it say that! And as for you, llstorm_troopll, that is the most UNTRUE thing I have ever heard. That is a down right insult better said. I am Catholic and proud to be and that is a lie! A dirty lie! Cathoics did NOT make up hell! So nobody take his word and spread it! Hope This Helps! God Bless! xoxoxo

angela your answer was not bad as far as it went ,, dont say i dont have a bible with me though , its not fair to give opinions without backing it up. anyone can install bible gateway on their computer and then have all they need at their fingertips .. adore him . your guaranteee also is useless cause their are hundreds of scriptures that say their is no place caled hell except the grave .. also it refers to the wicket as fat and their is nothing that burns as readily as fat also the chaff and the wheat the chaff is gathered up to be burned
ok for instance if u will look it up in bible gateway or your bible dear!!psalms 37,14ezekial 18,4 quoted earlier is also goodm john 3;36 1john 3 ,15 eternal life is not possesd by sinners adore him n if they be in hell and feel pain they have to then be immortals .. read jude 6 connect this with rev. 20.4
jude 6 satan and his angels not punished untill judgement -------day !! -- compare that with rev 20.4 1 corinth. 6 v 3 satans punishment resrved 2 peter ch 2 , 4 , 9 again satan and his followers rerved until a future date! rev 12 ;, 7-9 ,.12 -- these texts show that satan is on this earth psalms 37, 30 malachai 4 . 1, 3 evil is reduced to mere ashes. jesus compares the wicked to tares matthew 13.30tears dear one do burn but they are consumned by the fire ,. .. wicked cut off shall not be , in psalms 37 verses 9,10 ,28, , 34-38
child just because u never understood it before and never knew completely that this word hell is just a scare tactic from the dark ages,, paganisim believed this long before the rccc added it as a fact, now ADORE HIM i can give u many many more too from Job on up.. heaven is a real place too .. but new jerusalem where in is in heaven will come to this earthn and that will be where JESUS REIGNS READ IT IN REVELATION DEAR ONE IT EVEN GIVES US THE DIMENCIONS OF THE CITY , matthew points out jesus saying all the angels return when he comes back but his feet does not touch the earth he comes to get his people and for a time we go where he is at,,
hebrews tells us JESUS is our high priest in heaven not the atmospheric heave n or the stary heavens our solar system
but another time for this 3rd heaven paul himself spoke about . . i only wanted to point out we have to study l ifound this text in i corinth 14 --20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.
21 In the law it is written:
“ With men of other tongues and other lips
I will speak to this people;
And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,”[b]
says the Lord.

That person is correct. Now, there is a heaven for a limited number (Revelation 7:9) Hell does exist but not as a place of eternal fiery torment for sinners. The original words for hell in Hebrew and Greek are "sheol" and "hades" respectively. They just mean "the pit" or in our terms, the grave.
A chapter and verse that says 'hell does not exist" won't be found. It's not written there. But take the scriptures regarding death and punishment and it's clear.
Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10 ... the dead are conscious of NOTHING
Ezekiel 18:4... What happens to sinners? "The soul that is sinning it itself will DIE"
Romans 6:7 ... Do we pay for our sins after death? "he that has died has been ACQUITTED FROM HIS SINS."
