if prayer was allowed in schools, would that include prayer for all the different beliefs or just for the group that has the most members in the school.
If the school had christians, jews, muslims, pagans, satanist, buddhist etc...would all of them be allowed to pray in their special way or would this bring out more conflicts from the parents that don't want their children to know about other prayer and religion that isn't their own.

I don't think exposing children to a variety of religions is a problem. It's the one track mind I worry about. Prayer can be very general or very specific. I am O.K with a variety. Public schools have the responsibility to represent everyone. Whether they do or not is a whole other story.

You did not use the term 'public' So we must assume that you mean any school. You would concede that a school that professes a certain faith should be able to give prayer instruction for their faith. Yes?

However, a public school is of course a different matter.

Personally, I am less concerned with a school not allowing public prayer than I am with a school that attempts a public prayer and messes it up. I mean, I can take care of the spiritual upbringing of my own kids.

Spirituality does not have to be a public mater. In fact, public expressions of spirituality tend to diminish it when not done correctly.

Your question points to this problem. A public school attempting a public prayer is faced with your problem of trying to cover all the bases. This is not the way that it should work. Spirituality does not involve covering all the bases. Instead it involves delving into the faith that is intimately a part of your life. This may be different for different people, but in the end all points to the same God.

When teachers led prayers in the schools they were Christian prayers and no one was asked if they held any different beliefs. If official prayer were to return I imagine it would be the same.

School children can pray any time that they want to as long as they are not disrupting the class to do so. That's as it should be.

I've wondered that too. I'd like to hear some responses from people who are in favor of school prayer.

You know, I've heard it is now called "a moment of silence", "quiet time" and other references to non-prayer. Anyone can choose to pray to whoever or just use the time to take a quick nap.

i think school should be reserved for education....not religion.
*perhaps if they let each different religion have thier own prayer.....but then how much educational time is lost?? A moment of silent reflection is something I would not object to however......

They *are* all allowed to pray in schools. The school just doesn't sanction it.

Public schools should not be giving religious instruction.
