I just got a very nice gift from my mom in the mail for my three cats, a big stocking filled with 20+ Christmas theme toys. Seemed like a year's worth of fun for my kitties, but on further inspection about 2/3 of the toys are in my opinion completely unsafe for cats. Some are made with pipe cleaners with sharp ends, or are so poorly put together I worry about them eating googley eyes or other bits they could chew off and swallow. One had tinsel that came off when I opened the bag! I know how much it cost to have surgery done on cats how eat things that get stuck in their insides! So my mom's nice gift seems like a complete rip off for the money she spent (she left the price tag on, so I know it wasn't cheep either).

I also have a dog, and find the toys for them much better safety and quality wise then cat toys are generally. Has anyone had a cat injured from a toy made for cats that was unsafe? Does this bother you as much as it bothers me, that so many toys in the stores meant for cats are so unsafe? Why are stores selling such unsafe items? Are you upset that manufactures don't care about our pets at all when designing these poor quality toys? Seems that more are unsafe in the stores then not.

I do see a lot of garbage toys for cats in the pet store however I stick to about 2 or 3 brands that I know make quality toys with no tinsel, pipecleaners, glue holding googly eyes on. Try toys made by Fat Cat Inc. (I'll provide the links below). I also like "Active Cat" toys produced by The Cat Fanciers' Association. Another brand which I got for my kitten was Pet Links System; my Rex just got 2 stuffed whales with feathers (100% natural & real bird feathers, not dyed fake ones) attached to them because cats instinctively love feathers. Fat Cat Inc. toys have such detail on their products but it's nothing that can come off.
Active Cat toys you can find at Petco, but yeah I've seen a lot of cheepy stuff that Rex would tear apart in a second and then eat and it wouldn't be good. But then again many companies produce garbage just to make money. I have 3 birds and the pet stores carry products that are so harmful to their health yet they still carry them to make money.

I look at the toys in the store and just shake my head. Glued on eyes, loose bits, hard pieces.......AND if they came from overseas they've been treated with pesticides to kill any insects, so the toys will have residu on them...
I make my own. That way I know they're safe and they have a LOT more catnip in them than 99% of what's out there. The only ones I'd recommend are the Kitty Hoots, which have no tiny bits on them to be chewed off or come loose.

yeah, this crap bothers me. These people seem to forget that our pets are like our children and we would never give our oun kids unsafe toys to play with, other than cat nip I stopped buying my cat toys a long time ago as she loses interest in then anyhow. I buy Ribbons, yarn, scarves , secure small bells on some of them and she loves them much more than anything I have bought for her in a store and they don't cost hardly anything! She has an adsolute blast with them and we play for hours, of course I put most away when I'm not here to supervise her. Cat toys are a rip off!

I've never come across usafe toys personally, but judging by the answers here they do exist, and I am appalled. What's the point in decorating toys with things the cat won't notice just so they look pretty if they are unsafe?

definite! I consistently could desire to get 2 of each and every little thing so my 2 kitties do no longer think of one is favorite over the different. an astounding occasion of coloration determination is how my kitties react to their "dabird" feather toys. stupid me thought purely getting 2 toys might do the trick. The feathers are available random colours and that i did no longer pay any interest to what colours I chosen. One replaced into pink, the different replaced into blue. seems, they the two wanted the pink one. thankfully they're exceptionally solid approximately taking turns and that they the two did a selection on their pink "prey". Now, while i purchase fill up feathers, I make particular you purchase 2 of the comparable coloration (would be unable to consistently get pink nevertheless). as long as they the two have the comparable coloration (whether it fairly is blue), they luckily play with their very own prey. I do have 2 hands after all. I purely could desire to observe that they do no longer crash into one yet another whilst chasing their birdies around.

Agreed. They seem to make the toys more appealing to the eye, and don't focus on making it safe to play with.
I almost never buy the stockings *unless it's all balls, or I investigate all the toys before buying*.
"PetStage" makes some nice safe toys, though. I don't think I've seen anything by them that made me think "how unsafe".

I buy the Petstage toys for my cats. They hold up well to rough play & don't have things that can hurt the cats.
