I have a 7 month old boxer puppy that is limping around. The night before he played with my families other two dogs and everything was fine. I woke up in the morning to him limping around and he will barely put his foot down sometimes. When i touch his knee he gets angry. So i know something happened with it i just don't know what. I have an appointment with a vet in two days but i am worried he may have pulled a ligament or something. Is there any way i can tell or anything i can do at home besides just let him rest. Also i have noticed no swelling put he could and i just can't tell.

He could have pulled a muscle, sprained it, or broke it.
Take him to the vet soon and make sure he doesn't walk arund so much on it.

Welcome to the group. Join the Yahoo groups below.

Your dog may well have injured the ligament. The Conservative Management group will tell you how to keep him quiet and try to treat it without having to have surgery.

Orthodogs will help you if the dog requires surgery.

When dogs injure their ligaments, they often get torn. If the ligament is torn, the usual recommendation is to do surgery and remove the ligament. Traditional surgery involves replacing it with a simulated ligament band. TPLO and TTA surgeries involve cutting the lower leg bone so the bones meet at a proper angle.

NOW... you didn't say if this was a foreleg or a hindleg.
Hindlegs are usually the ones that require the surgery.

For now, keep him inactive. Potty time is done ON LEASH ONLY. Try to avoid walking up and down stairs.

There won't be swelling in all cases, but there's a drawer effect that the vet tests for to see if the joint has inappropriate sideways movement.

Good luck. I know this worries you. My male had surgery 2 years ago and the groups below were a big help and very supportive.

p.s. Did you check the pads and paw to make sure there were no cuts? If not, check it out. I know the dog responded with pain when you touched the knee, but it's a good idea to check the paw anyway.

Relax, dont let everyone on here freak you out. I have 2 boxers and one is 4 months (i breed boxers). Chances are it isnt a bone because puppy's bones are so flexable that ithey are almost impossible to break. So what i think happen is he pulled something i doubt he tore anything. You can wait to take him to a vet in two days because chances are the vet will only tell you he needs rest and maybe give him something for the pain. Use hot and cold compresses because that will help without doing any damage. For now do not walk him and try to keep him quiet as much as you can, i know that is almost impossible too lol but try. I am sure he will be fine, dont worry to much because he will only feel your nervousness. I can assure you this will happen more than once in his life because he is a boxer and they are one of the most hyper breeds out there. Email me and let me know what the vet says! Good luck, and dont take him to an ER vet because they will charge you out the nose because its Christmas also! talk to you soon hopefully!!

Years ago, I was running outside with my golden retreiever/german shepherd mix dog. He was about 6 at the time. He suddenly flopped to the ground and refused to put any weight on one of his paws. The vet checked him out a couple of days later and couldn't find the problem. So the vet put him under, x-rayed his leg, and found a simple 5 inch long stick that had gone between the dogs foot-pads and was IN the dogs leg. It was like a 5 inch long splinter. The vet cut the stick out and 2 days later, the dog was as good as new.

Who knows what is wrong with your dog. It could be just about anything. Get him to the vet as soon as possible. Merry Christmas.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if he is this aggressive, he's suffering, if you love him, you'll let him be put down, it's best for him, and your family's safety. I loved my dog dearly, but he had to be put down, he was my best friend, but I knew if he was suffering I wanted to stop it. But if you love this dog think about him and put yourself in his.... shoes... in a sense. Don't make him suffer anymore, if he's like this, his behavior will NOT turn around suddenly, he will be aggressive, that's who he has become, do something good for him, and let him go, I get that you love him more than anything, but have you heard the saying "If you love something set it free". Some day another dog will come into your life, you never will forget about him, but if you have a puppy that is kind and gentle, its better. Hope I didn't mess up your mood, or make you sad, its just the horrible truth. I'm sorry that he's like this, just do this for him.

In the excitement of playing he may have twisted it or jumped from the sofa and landing hard. Call the vet and see if hot pack or cold packs would be OK. You can buy those patches at the drug store that stay cold or warm.

Lets all hope he hasn't damaged a growth plate.

Sounds like he may be in pain. Who knows what could have happened to him?

Sounds like a trip to the Animal ER is in order.
