While a great film, it's not feasible. There are strict regulations about prisoner treatment and international laws regarding using them in combat roles. Besides, I was always suprised that, in the film, none of the guys cheesed it. These guys were given a choice between what was apparently a suicide mission, or thier sentence. Either way they were likely to die. Ask any con sentenced to die what they would do if given this opportunity. Most would bolt at the first opportunity.

not no, but HELL NO.

Spec ops units are highly trained and highly motivated units of men willing to die a silent death in a foreign land for our country. It takes a special breed of men to do this job. It is not at all like the TV show The Unit. They are trained on just about every weapons system n the world They need to withstand pain and torture that would kill a normal man.

These Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airman are the best of the best. My cousin did the SF selection course three times one he broke his arm on the obstacle course and kept going, the next time he broke his ankle and kept going. Third time he finished it all and turned it down.

When these warriors go on a mission they do not get to call home they cannot tell their family were they are going or what they are doing. Their families know that they might not come back.

You squad depends on you and you depend on them. If one person fails the whole mission might fail or worse the squad might lose their lives. This is no place for some 2 bit chump criminal that thinks he is a bad ***.

We just need to execute the criminals. Be done with them.

Movies are movies not reality-military success depends on many things and one of the primary is discipline. In real life it wouldn't work because most of the most violent prisoners would be with either psychopaths or close to it and would not have any regrets in killing one of "their guys" compared to one of the others. Even in the movie the one criminal there who was that way turned on the rest and got some of them killed so you think a unit made of that types would be useful? Most of the rest were actually low grade criminals are people who made a mistake and actually regretted it, honestly a criminal who made an error and regretted it and wanted to pay back society or prove there worth could be useful but the most violent would be good for nothing except clearing mine fields by walking blind folded through them or to test the effects of weapons.

The Dirty Dozen was a movie. Warfare is real life. Criminals are not accepted for service because they are the first to desert their units and the last to volunteer for dangerous duty.
Why would you wish to subject our Armed Forces to deal with people (I use the term loosely) that can't be trusted to function in society? I think your question is ill-thought and even less than well-intentioned.

Yes, we need to bring back Telly Savalas, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, John Cassavetes, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, and Charles Bronson. These guys all have the experience in both being super motivated criminal types who are prepared to undertake these sorts of dangerous missions and their trainers who know they can get these sorts of misfits into shape for difficult operations. Oh wait...they are actors.
Regards.

The Army already has plenty of people who are capable of killing. Prisoners are in jail for punishment and should not be rewarded by being given the opportunity to serve their country.

Being violent does not make a soldier, being disciplined does! You are asking for a person that cannot be trusted in a civilian environment to be entrusted with the role of protecting those very civilians!
