No, Caesar had decreed that every male should register at the place of his birth. Joseph was born in Bethlehem and had to return there for his registration.
The city was full for the same reason.

Ha, ha, no.
Joseph and Mary were not the only ones who had to travel to Bethlehem due to the census. Also, Bethlehem was a small town, there were no many rooms to rent.

Silly question with a real answer. The Roman emperor had called a census requiring that every man return to the place of his birth, so Bethlehem was pretty full.

Think about it...everybody was going all directions to take part in the census and pay their taxes...too many people and too few spaces. Think about the lines at the post office on the last day to file taxes!
Throughout time, all the expensive places book fast, while the cheap fleabag motels are almost always open...

Because Augustus Ceasar had sent out the word that all residents of the Roman Empire had to return that year to the towns of their birth, in order to be counted for a census tax.

The nativity scenes lack the same appeal when a Motel 6 billboard is crammed into the background.

It was actually a computer error. Hotels.COM had a computer virus and accidently booked all the available rooms.
Mary and Joseph sure had a good laugh once they found out what had really happened. GOOD TIMES.

They couldn't very well have stayed in the inn. It would have ruined the "coming from humble beginnings" thing that Jeebus had going for him.
You can't get much more humble than being born in a stable with a bunch of animals.

Tax returns, IIRC. Which in those days, meant heading to your village of birth. Which is why they were in Bethlehem to start with, not Nazarus.
Edit: I read it. Just didn't laugh ;)
