My Irish fiancee can drink me under the table with beer and liquor and she won't feel a thing. But when it comes to wine, she feels the effects after one glass. Why is that?

I'm 6' 5" and she's 5' 5"
I have a pretty high tolerance.

So if someone eats a bunch of sugar before drinking, does that increase the effects, too?

Your 5' 5' fiancee can drink you under the table? (LOL!) Too bad you're so much taller, because you obviously should be trading wardrobes.

I drink everyday to the point of passing out. But passing out is a strong word for it, I'm so exhausted I just fall right to sleep. So that's about six mixed drinks a night.. maybe seven. Back it up with 8 hours sleep and you have a very mild hangover which is barely noticeable. If I slip into double digit cocktails then that's another story and will result in a pretty bad hangover until after lunch. Hair of the dog is bit of a myth. It will chase off a bad hangover for a while but it will hit you again in the afternoon. Best alcohol management system I have is a six drink cap and a tall 20 oz glass of water before bed. Functional alcoholism is generally achieved by managing your dosage.

Tolerance - it is as simple as that. she hasn't sufficiently built a tolerance to Wine. Wine is higher in sugar and will intoxicate more quickly especially on an empty stomach. Hope that helps!
