It's not a huge deal, but it's not pleasant either. If you're a virgin it might be more than a little painful. Basically they have you undress from the waist down, put your feet into stirups (you'll understand when you see them) and scoot to the end of the table. There they put in a "spreader" into your vagina. This opens the vagina so that they can see and get at the cervix. To me, this is the worst part. When I got my first, at fifteen, I was a virgin and it was the first thing ever really inserted so deeply into me, and I did bleed. Of course, everyone is different, and it may not bother you at all. It no longer troubles me. After this they will take, basically long q-tips and grab some cells off your cervix. You won't even feel it, they'll just be some vague sensation that something is going on. After that they may take out the spreader and feel around with their fingers, but this is more socially awkward than anything else. Then, you're finished, and they'll leave the room so you can clean yourself up and get dressed. It's kind of a rite of passage for women, and I wish you the best. It's over in about ten minutes if that's any comfort.

You're mom wants you to get a pap smear. You can ask your mom to leave the room. She does not have to be in the room with you. Typically, pap smears are done by a gynocologist. But, other doctors can do the exam as well. The pap smear is very quick, only a couple minutes. The doctor will scrape some cells off your cervix. You can feel the doctor scraping, but it doesn't hurt. It's just unpleasant. Then the doctor takes those cells and sends them to a lab to be examined.

you'll be ok when it happens. you can feel it when they take the cell samples but it doesn't hurt. when i have mine done the nurse gets me to lie on my side and inserts the spreader to open up the vagina and they should be using lubracant to make it easier on your body. it will be over in no time. you dont have to have your mum in there if you dont want and i think that it is really cool that your mum cares so much about you knowing that cervical cancer runs in your family.
**Gyne-: Combining form pertaining to women. From the Greek gyno, gynaikos meaning woman.**

The doctor is just scraping cells off with something that looks like a tiny razor blade. Then it's smeared on a slide to check the cells. Most women don't even feel it. It's quick.
