My understanding is that all cars have at least one... Thoughts?

the differential on this car is the transmission / transaxle mounted to the side of the engine

All vehicles have some sort of differential, or at least a trans-axle as in a front wheel drive vehicle that incorporates the differential and transmission into one piece. A true differential is found on rear wheel drive and 4WD vehicles.

All cars have one.

If you didn't then the left and the right wheel would be locked and spin together. When you turn, one wheel would NEED to spin little bit faster (out wheel).

Cars with faulty differentials would often have tires that wear out vary quickly (or wheel that squeal going around a corner - even when not gassed)
