Surely the prophets and holy men no matter how good they were interpretated and put their own spin on the words they wrote.

See my point?

You are making an assumption - and treating it as if it was a fact. You shouldn't do that, lest you be putting a spin on things.

Good question that more people should ask themselves.

The answer is:

the bible is exactly what it appears to be, an amazing collection of a very little history laced throughout with contradiction and baseless claims each intended to serve some special interest at the time it was written; at the same time giving us modern day folks a scrubbed, look-see at a time past.

Pay attention to predictions supposedly made by biblical characters in a certain time frame, written by writers centuries later making amazing predictions about supposed future events that have already occurred at the time of the actual writing.

Scholars pretty much know who wrote much of the bible and when. It was most certainly written by men, who else?

The claim, by true believers, regarding influence by some deity is about as reliable as the one about which horse will win the next Kentucky Derby.

The bible has been rewritten and translated so many times over the centuries and often with a "spin" to suit those doing the rewriting and translation that it's contents can not be taken as credible. That's not to mention the effect of generations worth of "stories" being passed on by word of mouth in early times.

The fact that men as opposed to women may have been involved pales into insignificance somewhat.

Further doubt can be cast due to the fact that no complete source bible/documents exist for verification. Rather irrationally some people today take the bible and utterly believe it is a digital and precise word for word and contextually correct copy of something written in ancient language hundreds of years ago in a time when very few people could read or write anyway. I don't think so.

God used faithful men to write the bible and He is the Author. This is proved by the fact that the bible canon - tho' it spans thousands of years all ties together and its main theme is one -to fulfill and vindicate God's name and purpose. It also proved by the fact that in the hebrew scriptures particularly it records both the defeats and victories of the israelite nation. No other record in history does this occur. Normally a nation would record its victories and not its defeats.

Men did not write significant portions of the bible and still, there are sections that are NOT to be taken literally. One who takes the entirety of the bible literally is a fool.

You can't. Any Holy book is the same. Anything that is written or spoken is up for interpretation.

Your question should be the fundamental question believers ask themselves and can be said of all holy books and writings. They were all written by men which is why I choose not to 'do' blind faith. Personally my faith is in science and humanism.

All scripture was given by inspiration of God.
It is not mans word but Gods Word.
God would not allow His Holy Word to be corrupted by man.
Remember, He is God, and nothing is impossible to Him.
