Suppose that a man has commitment issues due to his father leaving the family for another woman when he was very young. The issues grew deeper when his father killed the woman and then himself, leaving the man without a father.

Keep in mind that this man is very afraid of taking risks, but he decides at the age of 26 to buy his girlfriend of 5 1/2 years an engagement ring. He is scared, but decides to propose. After he does, he freaks out and breaks up with her.

My question is this, did God give him those doubts? Or did the devil play off of his insecurity and put doubts in his mind? I know no one knows the exact answer, I would just like some opinions. Thanks a lot :)

I never want to have to go through a divorce. So I was praying that if we shouldn't get married then God would let us know before it was too late. I love this man with all my heart, but if it's not right, it's not right. So when I ask if it was God giving the doubts, I mean because we shouldn't be together.

He might be suffering from a "B" vitamin deficiency. Seriously that is the crucial question- which promptings come from the Almighty, and which are the results of our warped upbringing, or other weaknesses. In the case of the scared man, my first suggestion is that perfect love casts out fear. It is possible that his expectations are so unreal, and his fear of committment so great that trying marriage would be a mistake. In that case, it could be the lack of peace caused by the absence of the Holy Spirit, that caused the breakup.

I'd blame it more on socialization and traumatic experiences than on gods or devils. This same person would most likely have the same doubts if they were raised in a Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, or predominantly atheistic society. There is a cause and effect relationship among all things in this world that don't require belief in deities to be achieved. Ask your question again in the psychology section, you may get much better answers (or at the very least, more helpful answers). Happy Holidays!

God has made it very clear that He exists, such as the Earth and the universe. But some people prefer to worship that which has been created instead. Then when they get an answer to prayer they don't like, chalk it up to "I' guess I'm not in tune with the universe." God gives up evidence all the time, we're the ones who are always looking the other way. Or we don't like the evidence given to us. "Sure like to see evidence of God's existence." "How about a blue super giant star the size of Jupiter's orbit around the sun?" "Okay, so why didn't he make a purple star that big? Hmm?" The Bible was written by educated people who HAD to get it right the first time since the didn't have printing presses. they didn't have time to screw around making up stuff that would cause people 2,000 years later to die for something they believed in. God doesn't want us to doubt Him, he even asks us to test him out-- sift out the junk.

No, God does not give you doubts. Life and circumstances create doubt in ones self and environment. It causes emotions of entrapment, paranoia, fear of that which we cannot control, depression only to name but a few nameless feelings. It is normal for a person to react in the way which you have described when that person has gone through a trauma as serious and hurtful as your above given information. Seek professional help, confide in your priest (if you are religious). Neither God nor Lucifer creates doubt or troubled situations, humans do and they create it not just for themselves but also for those around them, which in the long run suffer more.

Personal insecurities are what cause most doubts. The devil IS the one who plays on these feelings, yes. We DO know the answer because God has revealed in His Word just how both HE, and how satan, works.

We are told "NOT TO BE IGNORANT OF SATANS DEVICES."

We are also told to "let your yes be yes, and your no be no."

"a double minded man is unstable in ALL his ways." is another time honored truth.

Opinions are like belly buttons...everyone has one. God however, wants us to know the truth and to operate our lives on those truths.

God is not the author of confusion or contention. But that does not mean that he was possessed and did the wrong thing. The only way you can know if what you are doing is right is to pray in humility and without bias - and be wiling to accept His answer, whatever it may be.

No. Doubt is an earthly chacteristic of man. Through faith in God, the doubt will eliminated. Mother Theresa, Peter, all people (great and not so great) have had doubts, but through a strong in Faith, God will provide and answer.

Why insert "god" into it at all? What is the most natural reason for a man to do this? Any person exposed to this kind of situation, would be very naturally afraid of commitment. The supernatural doesn't enter into it at all.
