I am thinking about donating my hair to Locks of Love, but I have a few questions.

1. Do they have to cut above the ponytail or can they just cut off the 10 required inches?
2. My hair was highlighted once or twice but my hair also has natural highlights so it looks like the ones I did have always been there...will this be a problem?
3. Are there any places that do not participate in Locks of Love? (Preferably around Frederick, Maryland)

Thank you sooo much to those people who can answer my questions. It would be greatly appreciated.

My daughter and I are growing our hair out for locks of love, so I should be able to help.

1. You need to get it cut above the ponytail holder, so leave yourself an extra 1/2 - 1 inch for that.

2. Coloring your hair does not matter!

3. I don't know whom does and does not participate, but you don't need a salon that participates. Either yourself or your hair stylist can cut it and sent it in an evelope directly to Locks of Love.

Here is a link with all the info.

Bless you for helping those that need it!
Happy holidays!

Alright I have done this before so I can answer your questions (well questions 1 and 2)

1. They can just cut off the 10 inches, they will put your hair in a pony tail then another pony to mark the 10 inches and cut right above that that way the hair will stay bundled nicely together.
2. As long as it looks natural and the hair is not damaged it shouldn't be a problem. In fact... don't even mention it.
3. I do not know about Maryland, but when you go into the salon I would ask just to make sure that they do participate.

They will measure the ten inches of the hair and put the ponytail holder there. Some places will braid it, others just put it in a ponytail. You can have as much or as little (over ten inches) cut off as you want, and the highlights shouldn't be a problem as long as there is no chemical damage to your hair. I've donated several times, and it's a wonderful thing to do. Most places that cut hair will do Locks for Love, but just ask when you make your appointment.

Here are the guidelines:
Please Note: Anyone can cut your hair as long as the guidelines listed below are followed. We encourage all of our donors to go to a salon they are already familiar with to ensure their comfort when donating.

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS
Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist.
Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable.
Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable.
We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.
Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.
Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
Please Note: Shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs. Although the shorter hair cannot be used in the hairpieces, it still greatly helps to reduce costs.
Gray hair will be accepted and sold to offset the manufacturing costs.

Thank you for helping out this worthy cause!
