I'm not sure if you mean you're getting "disc read error" or if the disc isn't showing up on the screen at all. This answer assumes it's "disc read error."

I wouldn't use a commercial lens cleaner if I were you, those can scratch the lens and do more harm than good.

If you touch the lens LIGHTLY with a q-tip soaked in propanol (isopropyl alcohol) then use the dry end to lightly rub alcohol off in a circular, center-to-edge motion, you've likely got the lens as clean as it needs to be and should leave it be.

If the dreaded "disk read error" persists, there are two things you might try before replacing the laser.

First is to adjust the height of the laser. You'll have to open up your ps2 to do this. The location of the adjusting wheel depends on the version of your ps2, so I'll refer you to a how-to at the link at bottom.

Second, if adjusting the height fails, you may - if you dare - adjust the voltage on the laser. This may get a little bit more usage out of a worn-out laser, but it also can make it wear out faster. This is a last resort, to use only if you're sure the problem is a bad laser and that you'd otherwise have to replace the laser completely.

Here is the link to the site that taught me how to fine-tune my ps2 laser. It has information for every ps2 version and step-by-step instructions.

remember, adjusting the pots is a last resort! Don't do it unless you absolutely have to.

Buy a CD lens cleaner. If that doesn't work do what I do and pop open the PS2 and clean the lens yourself. If buy blowing out you mean useing a can of air I can't see that working, the dust on the lens will need to be wiped away.
