Or only some of them?

In the U.S., the 20gb, 60gb and 80gb versions all include the ps2 "emotion engine" cpu which plays all ps1 games.

The new, cut-rate 40gb version doesn't contain it and at present is not backward-compatible. Sony may include software emulation in a future operating-system upgrade, like they do in Europe currently, in which case it would work for most ps1 games (ps2 as well)

There are also a number of ps1 games which are sold digitally in the Playstation Store for about $5 each, redeveloped to work on any ps3 whether it's backward compat or not.

If you got your PS3 near it's release date, then they should work, and the same goes for the PS2. But now, they have lowered the price, since they took of the compatibility of it being able to play PS1 and PS2 games. Though there are still some PS2 games that you can play on the PS3, you just have to look for the mark, that says so.

Let me refer all of the previous answerers to the following link.

I shall quote:
"The 40 GB system is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 and PS one/PlayStation® format software ONLY"

The 40gb DOES, in fact, play PS1 games, and should play all of them, just like all other versions of the PS3. PS2 games are the only games that cannot be played on the 40gb.

only the older ps3 versions. The newer versions don't because they wanted to lower the price $100. if you got your ps3 at launch it should work.
