a Christmas present is traditionally NOT supposed to be opened until Christmas day

Yes. When you are handed a present for any occasion or at any time the appropriate response is, "Thank you! Should I open it now?" Then they will say yes, or wait until...

The exception is when there is a party and there is a table for gifts. Then the person can open them later and thank giver with a card. In this case you were not handed a present.

Absolutely not! You are simply following etiquette and time honoured tradition ..... simply state that you never open a present before Xmas day and they should respect that. There is nothing wrong to ask if they mind etc and I am sure that they won't I feel exactly the same way but also I would simply prefer to open the prezzie away from the stares of others! Good luck ..............

I would say if their not going to be with you Christmas you should open them when they give you the present. They would like to see your reaction when you open the gift.

It depends on the person who is giving you the present and what sort of present it is in my opinion. If it is a big one, you should at least try to thank them and communicate with them when opening it. If it is a small one like a tube of sweets it is more acceptable especially if it's with friends who wouldn't mind so much.

No, it's not rude. I think that everyone understands the child which is deep down within us and wants to open presents at a certain point in the celebrations. But don't forget to send a note or make a phone call to thank them afterwards.

You should open it when you are with them--that makes their giving of the gift complete. They want to see you open it and that you like it.

You can always ask: Should I open it now? If they say, Sure, why not? That means yes.

Just Thank them and say you will put it under the Christmas tree and look forward to opening it on Christmas Day. Don't forget to call and thank them later !

I do not think its rude by any means. some people my insist you do open it when they give it to you. In that case i would go ahead and open it. If you save it for Christmas day, make sure you either call them or send them a thank you card for the gift.

If you are not going to see them on Christmas you should open it in front of them. If you are giving them a gift as well you should say you have something for them and you can open the gifts together.
