Picking up the dog will not make her sick but until the worms are under control it could make the kids sick. Its not likely, but possible. Its not uncommon for puppies to have worms and they can be easily treated and controlled. I'm sure the vet gave you some worm medication. Worms are spread by contact with contaminated feces. Pick up behind her so she doesn't reinfect herself. All she has to do is step in the crap and later lick her paws. Treat her with Nemex every two weeks until the worms are gone. People will get tired of constantly picking her up before long.

The hookworms are not from picking her up, and there is nothing unhealthy about picking her up. However, it is a problem when she doesn't want to be held. This could be because she doesn't feel like playing, wants to sleep, is being held in an uncomfortable way...etc. Pretty soon you might end up with a pup that growls when someone tries to pick her up...because whining and struggling didn't work the first time.

Hook worms do not come from picking the dog up ! Sounds like your family has young children. If that is the case try explaining to them that the puppy needs to walk around some. She also needs some alone time. Don't worry, when they open up their Christmas presents tomorrow morning the pup will be able to relax a little.

yes you shouldnt pick up a pup when it is trying to sleep - this is disrespectful.. its important that you allow pets time to rest too.. and dont do stupid things like pulling ears etc..
if the pup has a crate it should be a rule that when its in the crate it is left alone - the crate is the pups den, a safe place to go to get away from the chaos..

Christmas is the WORST time to get a pet...
hook worms are NOT from picking it up - but picking it up too much can result in stress.. you need to socialize it but also dont maul it...

best thing - make plans to attend obedience lessons when its older (and fully vaccinated) or you will have an unruly dog.

Everyone wants to pick up a puppy, it's only natural to want to love and pet it, as long as they realise that a puppy of this age does need its sleep. They are just like babies. You don't keep picking babies up if they are sleeping do you?

I can understand your concern and I think I would tell your family that it's not fair to disturb this puppy all the time or you will end up with a very fractious puppy. She must be allowed to play with her toys and also be allowed to sleep for as long as she wants to.

Puppies of this age can sleep quite happily between each feed and she must be left quietly to do this.

They can play with her when she gets a little bit older. That is when she will need their attention.

She would not get hook worms from picking it up.

Hookworms can cause a skin disease in humans called cutaneous larval migrans. To prevent human infection, good hygiene is extremely important. Teach children, especially, to wash their hands after playing and before eating.

Animals can be infected by ingestion of larvae either from contaminated soil or water; by eating an infected transport host; through larvae penetrating their skin, and by larvae infecting fetuses or the young via the uterus or mammary glands.

Picking up a puppy is actually a GOOD thing. This socializes the puppy, and the hookworms are not related at all to picking her up!
