Nope! The 40GB PS3 can't play PS2 games at all. They took out any hardware that would allow this! (to make it cheaper).

Not yet. There's no 3rd-party add-ons or patches to Sony's firmware. But that's the bad news. The good news is, Sony is likely to add good emulation to its firmware before long.

When ps3's were released in America, they included the ps2 CPU, the "emotion engine," making them run all ps2 games perfectly. For various reasons this was not done in Europe (for one thing it is EXPENSIVE...) so to compensate, the operating system, or firmware, for the European version included emulation software that enabled it to run most ps2 games. Not all, but well over half, mostly without too many glitches. Also Sony provided a list of ps2 games that work under this emulator, and with each update of the firmware, the list grows.

The firmware for the US PS3 never had the emulator component, as it was never needed before the 40gb version was launched here. So it wasn't ready yet... but it's reasonable to expect it to be soon. It's been working for a good long while in Europe already.

Simple answer, no. PS3 doesn't come with the hardware to play Ps2 games. No "software" hack can do it. A "hardware" hack can.
