I went to my family Dr for a physical back in Early Nov. My WBC was a little high (11.6) the differential showed an elevated level of Neutrophils (8.6). He said normally this is a sign of infection although I had no other symptoms so he put me on a 3 day antibiotic and told me to come back in a week. Well in a week my WBC was 12.6 but neutrophils were normalized esonophils were 0.5. At this visit they also examined my urine which they found a large amount of blood in but no other signs of infection (kideny stones? they think). They said to come back in two weeks and if anything was abnormal they would take it from there. Went back for my follow up WBC 11.9, Neutrophils 8.0 still blood in urine but culture revealed no infection. This time tehy put me in Cipro for 10 days (still taking) and said to get to a urologist. I have a urologist appointment on 1/2 (this was the soonest next is in March 08!) now should I go to a hematologist? I am a 31 y/o male with no other previous issues.

Not yet. Go to the urologist first. I suspect it is something very minor.

I would keep my appointment first with the urologist, and if they tell you the same, then I'd go see another doctor-hence the hematologist. I was having problems when I'd get pregnant over a 10 yr period. I had 5 miscarriages and no one could figure out why not even the so called fertility specialists. Finally, I went to see a hematologist, and found out I have Heterozygos Protein S Defiency. This was the cause of all my miscarriages. I was told I couldn't have any kids because I would now have to be on lifetime "coumadin" therapy, but I got pregnant in 1993 and had a healthy baby girl, but had 2 more miscarriages within 6 yrs of that pregnancy, so I had to have a total hystorectomy, so I can't ever conceive again. Good luck, I hope they find out what's the problem. Sounds to be like if your WBC is elevated that would be caused by an infection somewhere, whether it's a urinary or bladder infection. Hope you get answers. In my case, I guess bad news was better than no news.

Do you have any pain or discomfort on
either side of your back bone, up near
the bottom part of your rib cage on your
back side ? Your kidneys are located there.

From the kidneys there are tube like
structures that lead down to your bladder.
If there is blood in your urine, this can
be coming from an infection or a blockage
in this area. Stones can form in the kidneys
and work their way out of the kidneys and
into these tubes. If it blocks the flow of
fluid that normally goes through there, it
can become quite painful. People, who
are believed to have stone formations, are told to filter their urine through a strainer to see if they can collect any stones and save them for the doctor. They can do this through a coffee filter if necessary. People can develop tiny stones that will also wash out of the kidneys and may or may not
cause pain. Any stones can cause
infections. They can also cause blood in
the urine. However, the blood can come
from having kidney damage and also
bladder problems.
The urologist may do testing to see if
the stones are present. They can place
dye into your arm and scan to see if
there are stones that have developed.

Your doctor, because you have elevated
WBC and this blood in your urine...believes
it is coming from an infection or kidney,
tubes coming from the kidney, or maybe a bladder problem. Starting you on the antibiotic should help fight the infection until you see the urologist.

Our immune systems are made up of
different types of WBC (white blood cells).
Each one has a role in getting rid of bacteria
in our body. Some of their names are
Neutrophils, Basophils, and eosinophils.
When they respond to the bacteria in the
body, they will start to multiply in number
depending on how much it takes to control
the bacteria. They are like soldiers going
out to destroy the enemy. If the enemy
group enlarges in size, so will the white blood cells. The Neutrophils are the
first type of white blood cells that respond
to this and therefore the increase. Then
others will come after that to help out.
Since your white blood cells are high, that
means your immune system is responding.

Without the blood in the urine, the doctor
may of considered it an infection or a
possible hematological problem...but since there is clear evidence that there is blood in
the urine, it signifys a Urologic problem
instead.

I would wait and see what the Urologist finds. I definitely would stick with the
early appointment to see this urologist.
I hope this information has been of some help. If you develop "serious" back pain
in the area I mentioned...then there may
be a large stone trying to pass and I
would go to the emergency room.

A hematologist study ALL blood, and consequently could desire to be waiting to allure to blood from a affected person. in actuality, the final hematologist I went to (they thought I had blood maximum cancers) certainly used a small drill to drill by means of my hip and into my pelvic bone to extract blood marrow samples! and that i replaced into nonetheless unsleeping! What you're searching for for is the two a CYTOLOGIST or a PATHOLOGIST. the two one in each and every of those learn the pattern (cells or despite) as quickly as they have been taken from the affected person. in actuality, maximum Cytologists and Pathologists in no way even see the affected person. observe, thought, that a Pathologists is possibly to artwork with a good number of distinctive actual fluids and excrement, like blood, semen, urine, saliva, bile, puss, vomit, feces, and products of organs. it fairly is an extremely messy and pungent interest! The Cytologist is far less probably to could desire to artwork with those varieties of concern -- yet do no longer think of "in no way"....

The level of WBC warrants no worry. Do you have any history of blood disoder in the Family? Even then, your WBC level could be due to other physiological reasons.
Relax and have a happy new year.

See what the urologist says first.

Assuming you have not omitted anything from your story, you should choose a primary physician who treats disease, not just abnormal laboratory values.
