David,a man after God's on heart, once asked a similar question although not the same and I believe it may help in answering this.
Psa 73:1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]] Truly God [is] good to Israel, [even] to such as are of a clean heart.
Psa 73:2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
Psa 73:3 For I was envious at the foolish, [when] I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
Psa 73:4 For [there are] no bands in their death: but their strength [is] firm.
Psa 73:5 They [are] not in trouble [as other] men; neither are they plagued like [other] men.
Psa 73:6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them [as] a garment.
Psa 73:7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
Psa 73:8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly [concerning] oppression: they speak loftily.
Psa 73:9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
Psa 73:10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full [cup] are wrung out to them.
Psa 73:11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
Psa 73:12 Behold, these [are] the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase [in] riches.
Psa 73:13 Verily I have cleansed my heart [in] vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
Psa 73:14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
Psa 73:15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend [against] the generation of thy children.
Psa 73:16 When I thought to know this, it [was] too painful for me;
Psa 73:17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; [then] understood I their end.
Psa 73:18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
Psa 73:19 How are they [brought] into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
Psa 73:20 As a dream when [one] awaketh; [so], O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
Psa 73:21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
Psa 73:22 So foolish [was] I, and ignorant: I was [as] a beast before thee.
Psa 73:23 Nevertheless I [am] continually with thee: thou hast holden [me] by my right hand.
Psa 73:24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me [to] glory.
Psa 73:25 Whom have I in heaven [but thee]? and [there is] none upon earth [that] I desire beside thee.
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart faileth: [but] God [is] the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
Psa 73:27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
Psa 73:28 But [it is] good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
Many have asked the same or very similar question as your husband. Questions are Satan's way of keeping us from God.
The best of all blessings that we can receive is to be taken out of this world and into the presence of God. You may ask why and I can only tell you that God says:
1Cr 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
If God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to suffer and bleed and die for us than how can we as humans ask questions of Him.

God works in mysterious ways. God cares; He knows when people are suffering.
God's perspective is infinitely greater than ours. God sees the bigger picture, that our experiences as humans, however painful or unhappy, will be to our eventual benefit. Make no mistake, the good and loving Creator would not allow such things to happen otherwise.
When a parent takes an infant to the doctor for a regular vaccination to prevent some childhood disease, it's because the parent cares for and loves that child. The young child however will almost always see things very differently. When the doctor's needle goes into that little arm, the child will often cry out and howl from the pain. The child may look up at the parent, with those big innocent eyes, in the most pleading and pitiful way, as if to say, "Look at the horrible thing that's happening to me! Don't you care about my terrible suffering? How can you just stand there and allow this to go on? Don't you love me?"
The parent however knows better. He or she is aware that everything is going to be all right in a very short time (even though it almost always has an emotional impact on the parent to see the child distressed in such a way). A minor, brief pain is the price the child pays for a healthier life later.
Just as an infant cannot possibly understand the motives of its parent while it is still only a child, so too we cannot comprehend God's will for us while we are still as we are. It's a matter of perspective - the brief few years of a physical human lifetime, versus the eternity, time without end, that will follow.

children dying, life savings lost, health gone.... sounds bleak hun?. Scientist did an experience once and grew a tree in a climate controlled building. What they found was the tree grew and grew and toppled over from it's own weight. The resistance from being in the wind and storms give a tree's roots it's strength. Such is the storms of life. It's the person who's faith has been tested that has strong faith in God... not the one who had the sweetest ride in this life. The person who doesn't go to church may split hell wide open and the reason is not what some think. It's not that they didn't go to church and worship God?........it's that they condemned or made fun of those who did.

I feel for you. it's hard to be a christian these days especially be yourself. I think that at some point in our lives everyone has had doubts about somethings. the good news is if he denies being an atheists, then he believes in something somewhere out there. He just doesn't know what to believe.
to answer your question the Bible says that "it rains on the just and the unjust". all people have problems from time to time. everyone will have to taste the sting of death, or the loss of a loved one. the difference between being a believer and a non-believer is that we have a God who will help us through such troubled times. I hope this helps and merry Christmas.
My family will pray for yours.

Often the specific cause of instances of suffering simply cannot be precisely explained-at least not in this lifetime. Sometimes the best we can do is to accept it as explainable only by what the Bible calls "time and chance" (Ecclesiastes 9:11). Although God does not cause accidents, neither does He micromanage the lives of every human being to prevent them. Paul tells us that in this life we see through "a glass darkly" (1 Corinthians 13:12, KJV). We will never fully understand some things during this life, but we will in the world to come.
We should realize that even suffering that is a result of time and chance is not causeless. If it cannot be connected to a specific behavior, it is often nevertheless a consequence of one or more behavioral patterns followed by the human race since creation.
Adam chose, by sinning, to turn away from God. The rest of mankind has taken the same path. "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, ... death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12).
One of the consequences of humanity's decision to live contrary to God's instruction is a world subject to the capriciousness and vagaries of "time and chance" and the actions of others. This pattern will prevail until Christ returns to establish God's Kingdom on earth. The entire world will then be filled with the knowledge of God and His righteous laws (Isaiah 11:9). All of humanity finally will thrive in a world that is just and fair.

lol the deal with religion and this goes for all you can not question God. He is only human for thinking that but, God makes and destroys and your husband is right for thinking that, but on the other hand nobody can answer that. God knows he does things, and we should judge just believe. And God forbid anything happen in your family I am sure your husband will automatically turn to God... without question. It is a sick and very sad world that we live in... and horrible things happen everyday, God has a plan.

Reincarnation answers his questions. It makes a lot of sense. I don't believe people come back as animals, only people. If you look at the Bible you can find places where they left clues that Jesus taught this belief. One example is the man who was born blind. When Christ cured him, he was asked if the man had done something to make him blind, or if it was something his parents had done. If he was born blind, how could it have been something he did? Unless of course he had lived before. I think that's what Christ meant when he said we all must be born again. We then learn a lot about ourselves and experience the natural consequences of what we did in our last life through karma. That explains why bad things happen to good people. God is always just.

I would simply tell him that God isn't in the killing business anymore. If it were me, I would say that the enemy (Satan, the devil, whichever name you choose to use) is ultimately responsible for the atrocities committed in this world today. Then, I would tell him that God loves him very much, whether or not he chooses to believe in God.
Of course, I would not try to force my husband to go to church, either. My fiancee just recently made a decision for the Lord, but is still leery of going to church. So, I'm letting him take his own steps and make up his own mind.
Keep in mind that a true conversion often takes time. A conversion to Christianity made out of emotion will overturn itself at the first sign of trouble.
The best way to lead your husband to Christ is to lead by example.

The typical Christian response to that question is, "God has a plan for everyone on Earth and that as long as you put your faith in Him you will go to heavan."
As a Buddhist I would have answer that by saying that our universe as we perceive it is dualistic (compose of polar opposites.) You can't have pleasure without pain, there is no good without evil, and same as the polar opposites of positive and negative.
We are creatures in this universe that strive for the positive. We are taught from birth to avoid anything that is unpleasant, it is biologically apart of us. God is the ultimate, omniprescent, the positive AND negative. God is the source of ALL.
Please don't let your child lose his faith. But instead encourage him, even basing away from certain Christian values if you have to. "A man without Spirituality is like a candle without a flame."

Your husband is asking you a question that allows him to cop out of going to church. No one understands why these things are done or allowed to be done. There are some things that require you to put your faith in God and say to yourself."I do not have the sight that allows me to see the master plan." "I must accept that there is one and go from there.
If as some atheists claim there is no master plan and all of creation is an accident, then there is no reason for any of us to be here and all bets are off.
If you can't get him to go, do not worry about it. You go and pray for him.

Tell him there is no free will yet. Tell your husband that mankind is a child struggling to learn right from wrong.. and that he is involved even if he does not like it simply by having been born. If he does not like that children are harmed..then he is to learn how to ensure that laws which protect children are enforced...and so on. The learning of right from wrong is not that complicated..but getting to BE right is the difficult part for all people and takes practice.
