my little girls dog has been hospitalized for 10 days, she was very very ill, she almost died. Today she is being released and the vet said she will permanently need to be on a gastro diet. I am wondering if I can cut the cost of the food by making it at home or finding a cheaper brand. I have 3 other dogs, and it would be easier to switch them all to the new food than try to separate them all at meal times.

my 13yr old dog is also on a gastro diet. i found her foud quiet expensive so when i got a new3 puppy the vet said i could put oth of them on holistic lamb and rice. this works good for the older dog. che ck with your vet and see if this is an option for u also. by the way it only costs me about $18. a month for both. good luck

It's usually a low fat diet, like Hill's i/d or Royal Canin LF. You can cook for the dog but it is much more difficult to get it balanced correctly, and it's more expensive to cook. I would just try to feed her separately from the others as they don't need to eat the more expensive prescription diet.
