trees are alive likr you and me..... The Tree of Life shows how all living organisms have evolved since life began on Earth. In this simplified view, pictures at top of the tree represent the diversity of creatures alive today. The base of the tree indicates the time when life on Earth first appeared. Numbers along the side indicate the billions of years before the present. Although simplified, this Tree of Life image is based on data from thousands of researchers using the most up-to-date tools of molecular biology.
Monarch butterflies, monkeys and microbes are all related. LUCA, the last universal common ancestor of life, is indicated at the bottom of this image. Surprising discoveries suggest that this ancestor may actually be not a single organism, but rather a group of organisms that freely exchanged their DNA via horizontal gene transfer.

You could go in to the definition for life, reproduction, feeding etc, and by that basic defininition a tree is living.
But for children it would be best to simply mention centience, a tree is unaware of its self, it does not make decisions in a way you and I would and does not feel the way an animal would. But that is not to say it isn't alive but that it simply lives in a different way to us, to a tree being cut down is not a distressing event, infact a tree would have no knowledge of it happening and feel nothing either before or during, its simply no concious.

Trees can drink water and eat fertizer/minerals. If a branch of a tree is cut, the tree bleeds sap. Trees can grow or sicken and die. Trees can produce fruit or flowers. Even though trees are not mobile they are living. I'm not buddhist but this I know: all living things and creatures have life.

a tree does have life..of sorts, but not a soul in the sense of it will do good or bad things.
e.g. if you chop it down, the rings in the middle will tell you its age..
the seasons are the best answer for it.. e.g. in the winter / autumn it has no leaves or they drop.. in the summer it grows.. drops conkers etc.. to make more tree's
and tree's convert all the rubbish fumes that humans polute the earth with into clean air..
where do you think many things come from.e.g. rubber etc
so they do have a purpose.. in many ways. there would be no doors on the planet or no furniture etc without them =)

well every living thing has a soul, not a spirit. A soul is what animates the object to grow. This does not mean that killing trees is wrong because the souls of vegetable and animal life end when the body dies... unlike humans

Trees are alive, and we are allowed to take them down to use their wood, clear land for other uses, etc.
We should plant more trees to replace the ones we use.
Im no buddist, so I do not know their answer, probably that the "refrain from Killing" applies only to human and animal life.

The traditional christian (catholic) perspective, in part comes from the Greeks. The greeks thought all living things had a soul, including vegetation. They would predicate a vegitative soul for plants whose features include, essentially, the growth and nutritive aspects of life. Next would be animals whom include the activities of the vegetative soul (groth, nutrition, etc.) and also include animative activities of the soul (movement, sensation, etc.) Lastly would be the human soul which is the only immortal soul because it has all of the aspects of vegitative and animative souls but also the aspects of a rational soul which make it immaterial.

Trees have life, just as animals, people etc. we drink and eat and grow, the trees can't bloom or grow without life. however we do not worship the trees, we only are to worship our Lord, our creator of all things, We are celebrating His birth tomorrow, Jesus was born to take away the sins of the world so we can be restored back to Him. Our Lord is holy and can not tolerate unholiness so Jesus paid the price. He died for you and me. read to your children Matthew and Luke and that will teach them the truth.

Yes. When I see a tree about to be cut down, I ask the spirit of the tree to recede until it's over so they feel no pain. The Druids have a spell/charm to wake trees up. It is exhilarating. They do become conscious again. There is so much more to this mundane life than we can even begin to know. Fairy tales are hidden truth. Truth had to be hidden to stay alive as the church was trying to murder it.

Anything deemed organic is said to have life. And this includes trees.
Yet, is it wrong to cut down a tree? Certainly not.
All things on this earth were put here for man to use by God.
