I am not an atheist, but not all marriages are under God. One can get married by getting a license and going to a JP. Marriage is a civil or a civil and spiritual union, either or.

While most marriages are performed by a religious leader per tradition, modern marriages are legally binding (by man made laws). Even a priest must be granted the authority to perform marriages by the state. In the US, they always say "by the power vested in me by the state of California", for instance.
A marriage can be performed by a justice of the peace, a judge or even the captain of a ship.

Not all marriages are 'under God'. A marriage is a commitment between two people and, if God were mentioned, those people who don't believe will just ignore that word. The commitment is to your partner.
I am not sure whether you are trying to be controversial or you are simply being ignorant but I honestly feel sorry for you if you cannot see beyond your own belief system.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but marriage is a legal issue not a religious one. Really, it's a union between two people who want to stay together, and how they do that is up to them, but in our modern, government oriented society, it's about laws of men, not God. Besides, God let's us do whatever we want. Look through all of history to see what we humans have done if you don't buy that idea.

Marriage is not done under God. U can choose to have a religious wedding, but in the end if no marriage agreement is signed, the marriage is non existant.
Marriage is done under the state or country.

I guess you missed the part of American law about Justices of the Peace and other civil servants vested with the power of the government to perform non-religious weddings.
My niece just got married in her backyard in an atheist ceremony. She's legally married as she has the CIVIL license, oh wise one.

I am responding to this question in response to "Rev Donna's" answer.....as I have spoken to her before about SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE
1 Timothy 1:24: "This is a faithful saying that Christ Jesus came into the world to SAVE sinners, of which I (Paul) am chief". Paul never wished that athesists go to hell, but, rather, that they would come to the saving knowledge of Christ.

Marriage has nothing to do with 'God' it is merely a legally binding social contract between two people who wish for what for what ever reason to join their lives, I include gay marriage here.
I have no argument with people who wish to cement their contract in a religious manner as long as they don't expect the rest of us to follow suit.

I got married "under God" in a Catholic church. Now I'm an atheist. So is it valid? LOL...
BTW I hope your hair doesn't look like that in real life.
