This is all down to personal preference. Both are good systems, but really cater for a different audience.
In terms of technology, the PS3 is the superior system. 360 has a better range in games, but only because it has been on the market for 15 months longer - however, PS3 has a bigger percentage of games that has an IGN game rating of 8/10.
If your family member has an HD TV - the PS3 comes with a built in Blu-Ray player too...cost difference is very small these days too.
I own both system, and a Wii, and since i bought my PS3 in August, the 360 and Wii have been collecting dust.

I think that the Xbox 360 is better for a family. Pretty soon there will probably be PS3 fanboys coming in and post tech specs and say the PS3 is better. Just think of them as robots and only care about tech specs and don't want any fun. 2nd you shouldn't have put this in the PS answer boards, as most of the answers would more likely be in favor of the PS3. Trust me, gaming companies like the Xbox 360 best as a 3rd party game console, so it will likely have the biggest library out of them all. The PS3 is probably going to become a better console in the future, but the XBOX 360 will probably be the better one overall. If that family member likes shooters, sports games, a few good RPGs, RTSs, online play, and want future poteintal, get him the XBOX 360. If he likes stealth games, RPGs of any kind and a blu ray player, get the PS3.

Reasonable enough, Xbox 360 way the first in the market so it have many games but speaking of the future, the games of 360 will soon be outnumbered by PS3 because PS3 has some great features.
That's it. Buy a PS3.

for family, the 360 or the Wii is the best. the PS3 sucks! no good games, looks crappy dont buy it! i reccomend 360 since, any good games that did come out for the PS3, were even better on the 360. especially because the 360 has games like Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and Assasins Creed.

I would get an XBOX 360. I have one and it's great. the games for it are awesome. There aren't that many good games for the PS3

Personally, i'd get a PS3 (and i did! Woo-hoo)
But you can't really go wrong with either.
One note though; Don't get the Arcade version of the 360 if you can help it. With no hard-drive, you're losing half the benefits of getting a next-gen system.

I have always been a sony guy. but recently bought a 360 because of game selection and cost.

either is good, but the 360 really has the better library right now, plus xbox live is where it's at.
