By the mid 19th century, Sweeney Todd was already part of London urban legend. The story first appears in print in the penny dreadful, "The People's Periodical", issue 7 (November 21, 1846). A melodrama about Sweeney Todd, "A String of Pearls", written by George Pibdin Pitt, is presented at the Britannia Theatre in Hoxton in 1847. Writer Peter Haning claims that the historical Sweeney Todd was tried at the Old Bailey and hanged at Tyburn in January 1802, but so far at least, no records can verify these events.
