Marines are upset that their glory days are over. We don't conduct amphibious assaults anymore. We bomb them into the stone age first (AIR POWER). So, the Marine Corps is having to constantly fill traditional Army rolls, and they don't like it.
Meanwhile, Army doesn't like dealing w/ the attack, attack, attack gunge-ho mentality of the Marines. Army likes to secure and stabilize an area before pressing forward.
It's a philosophical difference that is ingrained early on, and will (hopefully) never be resolved. ********* And, sometimes its just fun!
******************
SGT Pink Blankey... No SH!T the Marine Corps has airplanes. I never said they don't. I just simply put out there that the Marines are supposed to be experts at amphibious warfare. Now as far as Marines sitting and holding.... one word "COUNTERINSURGENCY." I guess you've forgotten many are currently deployed to Iraq. Check out the link below. The '70s were a LONG time ago. Thank you for your service. But get a clue, & check out the CURRENT events.
Edit, and who has the bulk, if not all, the bombers in U.S. inventory? The Air Force. And who did the Air Force belong to in WW2? The Army. (AIR POWER)

Marines are proud of their service, and others just serve.
To quote Pres Reagan ""Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem."
It's just a military rivalry that has lasted for years.
And angryman, you sir are so far out in left field and apparently know nothing of combat issues. The Marines have their own air power, and unlike the Army, we don't sit around and wait to secure, we secure then let the Army sit around!
And the Marine Corps glory days are far from over.
That's why they call us "The Few The Proud, The Marines"

Its a rivalry..Like in High School/college sports or Arny/Navy game.
You can say anything about your School..good or bad..that you want but if a rival says the same thing then your going to defend your school at all costs. There is no real animosity between rival military bickering back and forth. If Alcohol is involved, then sometimes it can get out of control, but that's the brown bottle talking, not the uniform. All who wear the Uniform of the United States realize they have a important part to play in the defense of our Country.

They are not. Both are part of the department of defense. They might fight and die right next to each other in very same places. But just like any company, the guys in one office might find it fun to tease the guys in the other office over minor differences that make them unique.
It's counter-intuitive, but sometimes kids show they like each other by PUNCHING them. Same goes for these guys. What they really mean is: "I like you so much, but I'm socialized not just say so 'cause I'm afraid others might think I'm weak or emotional." Then again, they could be jerks who personally hate each other.
In short, your question paints with too broad a brush. There are numerous counter examples if you look for them.

You are correct.
Even at the highest levels they compete.
It is usually about congressional support for a larger budget.
To be able to justify receiving the congressional funding that would have gone to the OTHER branch they must make THEIR branch look like it is more relevant to the security issues & challenges.
I served in the USMC 1996-2002

the marine corps are just a superior package. just think when the news reads the president is sending in the marines, people are like oh crap something big must be going down. when the news reads u.s. soldiers will be going in people are like oh something stupid and minute is going on in some friendly country. come on now everyone has done it when they have heard those headlines before. who guards the president? who is always the tip of the speer? who looks best in uniform. when was the last time you have ever seen a marine in a camoflauge uniform walking through the mall or grocery shopping, thats right never! the army just can not except the fact that they have to play second fiddle to the corps. but i will admitt we do like to run our mouths. and thats what helps make the public think there is a huge rivalry. oh yeah one last thing. when in the history of the united states have the united states marines ever retreated, thats right never. and for the army, they can not say that with out it being a blatent lie.
