Sometimes I feel that people like to mess up ppls fun.
Now all of a sudden, the Golden Compass is against Christ and the Christian religion?? I have watched the movie twice and I have a fairly strong education and yet still I battle to see the evil connection. I highly doubt some kid or teenager is gonna see this connection.
The are plenty of movies and games that the church should be using their powers to get rid of. The golden compass however is a sad choice.
I would love to hear oppinions about the movie specifically from those who are against The Golden compass??
What is so wrong about the Golden compass?

Okay first of all they dont kill god! okay! i love the movie its so great. people just need too stop over thinking things. This is exactly why i dont like religion. it ruins so many things for people. so many little kids would love this movie but there is so much controversy about it that most of them cant see it. Im so tired of religion ruining so many things for people. i mean im not saying it towards like any religion in specific but i mean seriously people its a MOVIE get over it! Its not going to come true its not like tomorrow we are all going to find out that dust is real and we all have our own little deamans or something so just SHUT UP about it please!

How can a story set in a fantasy world be attacking Catholicism?? I mean, maybe it is, I don't know. I know nothing about the Golden Compass, but I just find that a little ironic. Is the dude that wrote the book like the nemesis of Tolkein and Lewis or something?

The Golden Compass has "some" redeeming value. It portrays goodness, compassion, forgiveness, sacrifice for others. But it also portrays the Magisterium (the title of the leadership of the Catholic Church) as a bunch of lying, thieving, child abductors. It portrays the Church as a place where bad things happen. It portrays "daemons" as the friend of children. The ultimate goal of the characters in the story is to kill God...who is a senile old man. Your "fairly strong education" obviously didn't include ANY religious education or you wouldn't have even had to ask this question. The author of the story is a self avowed atheist who has publicly stated that the goal of his story is to turn children from Christianity!!! Exactly how far did that education go?

Phillip Pullman, the author of the trilogy that begins with The Golden Compass, said in a 2003 interview, "My books are about killing God." (God is killed in the third book.)

In a 2001 interview, he sais he was "trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief."

One of the characters, a nun, in one of his books calls Chriatianity "a very powerful and convincing mistake".

In an interview when he was asked about some contraversy of some religious people being against the Harry Potter series, he said, "I was quite happy for Harry Potter to get all the attention so I could creep in underneath all of it."

His statement on Harry Porrer (by J. K. Rowling) is, "I'm a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people - mainly from America's Bible Belt - who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven't got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I've been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God."

I believe those against Harry Potter are overreacting. (For one J. K. Rowling says she is a Christian.)

Phillip Pullman, on the other hand, (according to his own words) has an agenda "to undermine Christian belief."

Read the books which I think are brilliant. (But given my attitudes I would wouldn't I?) and I'm looking forward to seeing the film.
Perhaps they've soft peddled in the film it would not surprise me.
Read the books then re-post, the Amber Spy Glass is the killer and it is amazing. I won't spoil it by saying more.
Looking back at the other answers I see some people have given it away...shame on you.

I have not watched the movie .. I just don't bother with television or movies all that much.. The big fight appears to be though..that the man who wrote the book "Golden Compass" is an atheist and in the book it supposedly says that all Christians should be killed or God should be killed..something like that. So I guess people want to avoid the movie to avoid giving that guy money.

I love how people never do their own research. (not the questioner, I'm speaking about some of the responses people give to questions like this)

The children are not trying to kill god. There is no god in any of the books. There is a head angel, who they specifically say did NOT create anything, but was "ruling" over the angels until he went senile and his second in command took over (and he was a jerk). The children try to help the senile angel (although they don't know who he is, nor care-it has nothing to do with their real mission).
Their mission is to stop the destruction of all the universes from happening.

The real reason for the outcry is that the author is an atheist and there is mention of christianity. It's a different viewpoint, which seems so horrifying to some. It has one sentence where a character says that christianity is a mistake and perhaps two other sentences directly relating to the christian story.

The golden compass teaches children to question their beliefs and to fight against a hierarchy of a religious organization which wants to rob their souls when they are young.

now why do you think the Catholics are all upset and trying to say it's against Jesus. It's their fears that motivate them to quash the truth.

If Jesus saw these Bishops living in these Mansions and being carted around in Limos to confirmations and masses he'd have a fit!

An atheist wrote the series of books. Supposedly, children rise up against and kill God. The movie is a watered down version of one of the book.

I see nothing to get all upset about. It is a fantasy and has no basis in reality. I plan to see it sometime this week.

Well, in the book there's this scene like in the Exorcist with the crucifix, involving Nicole Kidman's character. They did actually film it, but it ended up on the cutting room floor. Check You Tube -- I think I saw it there.
